Taken during a sailing trip in Germany, Heiligenhafen. / We anchored in front of a beautiful coast. When I saw the shining red from the yacht I just had to go there. This is my second attempt to play with this image to try to make it more interesting. I am not a big fan of black and white myself (I seem to need some color or it seems drab and boring to me). My wife had asked me to try this image in B/W and have it blown up to matte, frame, and hang on the living room hall. She liked the B/W version a lot and admittedly, so did I. I don’t know what prompted me to try this composite of B/W and color, but this image seemed to me to be a good candidate to experiment with the concept. I “think” I like it and to my surprise, my wife’s initial impression was that she liked it very much, so we have had it matted and framed and hung in our living room.

I spent several hours waiting to get a few unique shots of these cygnets flocking around Mom. When one climbed up on her back, my thoughts turned to “now, if only she would turn just a little more sidways. Fortunately, I managed to get a few shots like this one while the light was right because she continued swimming further away without ever turning much. The nature of wildlife photography often necessitates that you take the best you can get. I had originally posted this under the title “Free Ride”, but when my daughter saw Free Ride, she said it reminded her of herself with her clan. She has three boys and one girl (the youngest who she fondly refers to as her princess). They have a summer home up in Northern Wisconsin and are very much into nature, hiking, and boating. She asked if I could blow it up and frame it for her wall up in the summer home with the title “Family Outing”.

Photo-manipulation using Corel Paint Shop Pro…duplicated original image…turned that layer into b&w at a 92% opacity and removed the background of the flower.
