  • The original painting is a 5×7 miniature work done with pencil and acrylic paint. This is a “free association” work that I did while watching the SciFi Channel’s mini-series “Tin Man”, which was a modern re-working of “The Wizard of Oz”. Dorothy’s face has merged with the tornado to dance across this checked game board in this surrealist image that I hope you will enjoy.

  • Acrylic on 11×14 canvas board Springtime is my favorite season, I just love all of the new growth and color that pops up! I’ve seen Spring in many places, but I have to say, Springtime in Oregon is absolutely stunning! On my drive home from work the other day, I noticed that there are Cherry Blossoms and what I think are a type of Japanese Maples blooming EVERYWHERE!! Some are bright pink, some are pale pink, some are a vibrant purple! These new colors really stood out and stuck in my head. Originally, I saw this painting as having the deep green background, that you see, with shades of purples for the leaves…..I wanted more of a wine or grape feel. But….I encountered a slight problem. The royal purple that I wanted to lay down first would not show up on the deep green in the background! I was rather frustrated, so I went back to the original inspiration and mixed up some pink. Once I started laying down the pink, I thought to myself: “Oh dear, this is WAY too bright!” Needless to say, my spirits were crushed a little when things weren’t working as planned. But…I trusted my Muse and let her guide me through this. Once I was done with the pink, I went back in with some purple…YAY for the bright pink letting it show up this time! Then came the trunk and branches, followed by the highlites. Of course, my troubles couldn’t be over! I was stuck! I couldn’t decide how to finish off the piece! What final color would tie everything together? Would there be a home for a faerie in this one?! So, I went back to the source of inspiration for this series – the music! The music that was playing during this painting was from Faerie Radio again. (Really, go listen!! FaerieRadio) Songs by Australian artist, Louisa John Krol were playing much more frequently than any other artist on the playlist. I took this as a sign and went to her myspace page to hear more. I was a little bummed at first that she only had one song available to play, and it wasn’t one that I had heard. But, I clicked play anyway and everything fell into place! “Come blackbird and take my soul away / You won’t keep your vagabond at bay! / Your fortress hangs heavy in the tree: / Come blackbird and take the soul of me away…. / Who will listen into your lore? / Will the echo follow your call? / Who will listen while you’re waiting by the wooden door? “ / Louisa John-Krol So, I went back to the canvas and added in the Faerie. She’s waiting, by the wooden door, ready for the blackbird to come. She doesn’t want to be forgotten when she’s gone so she blows some of her magick into the wind… UPDATE / I took the original with me to my very first art show….it was the only painting that sold that night! YAY! It now belongs to a very fun and lovely 16 year old girl! Thanks! Available as a T-Shirt HERE
