One delicate lone green fern frond is the center of the maelstrom of fall color in this image. This was produced by a long shutter exposure and twisting the camera over fall leaves scattered on top of a patio table. No digital manipulation was used; this is ‘as is.’ Canon 40D, Canon 10-22mm lens, shutter 6”, f/16.0, ISO 100, polarizer, neutral density filter, handheld camera, fall leaves and fern frond, patio table. Rhinelander, Wisconsin, USA. September 23, 2009.

Upon his belly, young boy lies / Across lawn lush and green / He marvels at the life he spies / That usually goes unseen / / Each blade of grass is now a tree / Each pebble now a hill / This micro world that he does see / Like forests of Brazil / / And creatures scurry to and fro / With scary compound eyes / Antennae tell them where to go / To find their food supplies / / They tire not upon their quest / For they have many legs / They travel quite far from their nest / Leave workers with their eggs Between the blades of grass this world / Young man now knows about / A magic kingdom he’s unfurled / Which grows with each new sprout / / This fractal artwork was inspired by a memory of when I was very young and would lie prone on the grass marveling at the intricate web of life living amongst the blades. It was like a secret that I knew that the ‘big’ people did not know, this entire world hidden right beneath our feet. It’s sad how we tend to take the magic of the world for granted as we get older. Hopefully, this artwork will help you to recapture some of that magic we all experienced as children about the world we live in. / / The original is 7200×10800 pixels at 300 pixels per inch. The fractal was created in Ultra Fractal 5 using my own gradient and parameters. I have included a few detail cutaways below so you can see the detail. The detail cutaways are at 50% of the original size of the artwork. / / / / / / / / /
