An aspiring Buddha in the United States faces the challenges of modern, urban life and social injustices. What would a socially engaged scene of enlightenment look like? This scene features an Asian American woman buddha or boddhisattva in traditional enlightenment posture, but with eyes open and a bullhorn in her lap. From the side come the forces of Mara – bombs, a police helicopter and fierce dogs – all symbols of social injustices. This buddha is firmly planted on the earth while she faces these challenges.
