Puu Mahana Beach (Green Sand beach) is the spectacular erosion product of a volcanic cinder cone near South Point on the Big Island of Hawaii. It can be reached by a 1-hour hike through beautiful scenics (take plenty of water!). The unusual tone of the green sand is due to the large proportion of semi-precious stone olivine polished crystals, which are left behind during the breakdown of lava. Crystals of olivine form in abundance during the cooling of hot lava. Because they are much harder than the lava matrix, they tend to accumulate near areas of lava erosion.

A sunset behind the towered buildings of a city casts but shadows and variants of grey and whilst there is life every where, varied textures of greens are to found in the setting sun of the islands, it lifts the smell of flowers and the sound of a breeze though the trees! :)
Large swells hit the south shore of Oahu every summer to the delight of Honolulu surfers. Sandy Beach is famous for its pummeling shore break and death defying boogie boarders, body surfers and skim boarders. / Visitors beware of its neck breaking shorebreak ! . / Featured in the calendar “Presidential Beaches”. At the end of a rugged 11 mile hike across hard, dry, black lava, I finally reached my goal—a tiny campsite nestled against a cloud-shrouded cliff. / I set up my tent and just wanted to plop down and take my boots off. But I had seen a tiny foot trail on a map, which led up the cliffs from this campsite. I grabbed my camera and headed into the mist. There, just a 10 minute hike up a muddy trail, I became surrounded by birds, moisture, ferns, and colors. It was an awesome spot, and thankfully hard enough to reach that very few people will ever find it. Selfish of me? Perhaps.
Haleakala Volcano crater is dormant now, thank goodness. I live on the side of that mountain, 15 miles from the last eruption. If Haleakala ever erupts again, there really is no place to run and hide, and so I suppose all of us on Maui will start swimming towards Japan. Within the arid crater, there is 100 square miles of lava and cinder. Dry and cruchy, like Grapenut Cereal. However there is one small corner of the crater which captures the cloud moister. In fact this is a tiny rain forest ecosystem. This place is called Paliku, “the Stand Cliff”.

18×24 Watercolor and chalk pastel on cold-press watercolor paper. Living in Hawaii brings one close with many beautiful creatures. Since my first encounter with sea turtles at the age of 16 I have felt an affinity with sea turtles. Swimming with them is like the equivalent of resting with a herd of deer out in the wild, inches away. / FEATURED in the group: Works On Paper / /

My son found this little beauty sitting on a leaf near our hotel in Hawaii. He said it was from Madagascar, which I tried to gently point out was not the island we were on. He ignored me (Gets that part from his mother) and waited till we were safely back in Japan where he could show me in his animal book that the said gekko was indeed from Madagascar, so I have now learned an important lesson about contradicting six year olds without being sure of my facts…..
