  • Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery White-bellied Sea-Eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster) The White-bellied Sea-Eagle is often conspicuously perched on a high limb or cliff crag overlooking coastal or inland waters. Habitats include vicinity of islands, reefs, bays, headlands, beaches, estuaries, mangroves, swamps, lagoons and floodplains; often far inland along major rivers. Soars skilfully; circles on rising air columns above sun-heated islands or headlands, or above coastal ranges or cliffs where the wind is deflected upwards. Sometimes soars in company with similarly sized Wedge-tailed Eagle. Great Sandy National Park, Queensland.

  • Persistence pays off so they say, and in this case it surely applied. The Great Blue Heron had been fishing for hours and finally flushed out (literally) a fish from beneath a rock. (That’s difficult to say really fast) The look on both faces is priceless (zoom in) as this moment was caught on film. As much as I was saddened by the abrupt ending for the little fish, I also had to applaud the perseverance of this patient Heron. They are the consumate fishermen and this one was such a joy to photograph and film all afternoon here on wild, natural Vancouver Island. 50% of all proceeds from sales goes to Defenders of Wildlife at www.defenders.org. Thanks for viewing my work. :o-)

  • The jib of the old couta boat crane stands out against the dawn sky, now on land, at Point Grey at Lorne as a reminder of one of the boom industries that supported the coastal township for many years. / Lorne Pier was home, by the 1960’s, to a barracouta fishing fleet purported to be Victoria’s largest, 28 at it’s peak. Couta boats had a distinctive style, sailing with a gaff rig and featuring a spacious cockpit allowing hooked fish to be pulled in quickly over the stern. Boats were kept on the deck of the pier and launched and retrieved using this crane, when it was on rails on the original pier before the upgrade. / / Pentax istDS Camera.
