I have been here and seen the coming of man to my rivers. In my shadows have walked wildlife that no longer walk here. From my lofty peaks you can see for many miles. Once I stood higher than the far western mountains. I may have shifted and changed but I remain. My rivers are cold and my forest cool. From my bowels man has both feed himself and built his shelters. He has raped my slopes for my wood. Fought wars within me. I still survive. Mist still shroud my valleys. Flowers still shine their beauty for all to see. Come walk my paths an fish my streams. Stand on my peaks and walk my valleys. Loose yourself within yourself as your cares fade away when your with me. I am the Great Smoky Mountains, the Great Iron Mountains, Far Blue Mountains, the Sha-cona-ga. Most just call me the Smokies, and I remain. And a quote from John Muir “The mountains, are fountains, not only of rivers and fertile soil, but of men
Taken from the parking lot at Clingmans Dome,GSMNP. The mountain was named for Brigadier General Thomas Lanier Clingman, by Arnold Guyot a geographer. Clingman in the 1850’s was the first to accurately measure the height of the mountain. The mountain was called Kuwa’hi (the mulberry place) by the Cherokee. This is where the legendary great bear chief and doctor dwelled. In whose magic bath the wounded bears are restored to health…Settlers first called it Smoky Dome then later was called Mount Buckley before Guyot named it offically
Early mourning is so calming and peaceful. The fog that has shrouded the landscape is slowly lifting. Nature seems to be in slow motion and hush. Sit and enjoy what God has gave you. Let nature enfold completely, your whole being, completely covering you with its serenity……..Cades Cove GSMNP
This is Denali, also known as Mt. McKinley, taken by my mate-for-life, Howard Marsh, in 2003. Denali is within Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska, some six million acres of wild land with one ribbon of road. Most visitors travel by old, old hard-seat school buses, or ride bicycles or hike. That road is closed to vehicles in order to prevent the effects of too much carbon monoxide, too many people, too much risk to the wildlife. Even air traffic is moderately restricted, although some say not enough restrictions are in place to preserve the peace and quiet. Once a year in the fall, the road opens to a select number of lottery winners. I had done some technical editing and layout work for Denali National Park that year, and was given a vehicle pass. A rare gift. Denali is considered the crowning jewel of the park as North America’s highest peak – an awe-inspiring, 20,320 foot wonder. Mountains and Mountain Light featured – Thank you! Alaska ~ Beyond Your Dreams featured – Thank you! As-Is, untouched scan of film. / / Photo by Howard Marsh
Got up for dawn at Port Campbell only for it to be drizzly and overcast, but by the time I got down to the beach and the sun started to rise some awesome colour came through and it made the early start well and truly worth it! / Settings Canon 40D, 10-22mm EF-S. This little gem can be found just around the corner from Loch Ard Gorge near Port Campbell off Victoria’s Great Ocean Road, Australia. I came here the afternoon before and there were snap happy tourists everywhere but decided to come back the next morning and there wasn’t a soul in sight, just the crashing ocean to keep me company… Unfortunately as of early June 2009 this archway has collapsed leaving two apostles next to eachother. Here is most definately my favorite shot of the 7 day driving holiday. The plain sky of this arid area made for a dull sunset, and I was feeling a little flat, as I knew the drive out of this National Park was not going to be fun with the unsealed roads, and plenty of roos to hit. I knew it was a full moon tonight, and I would have left hours ago if it wasn’t. Rhondda says to me suddenly, why is there a “Coca Cola” sign over there?? This was no Coke sign, this was the MOON!!! WOW what a treat to the senses, it was definately the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen, and to be honest, this photo does not do it justice. For about 1 hour, it was the most vibrant red I have ever seen the moon. The colour of the moon in this shot has not been altered at all. I would just like to thank Mother Nature for giving me this experiance, and giving me even more appreciation for life. Great Wall of China, Mungo National Park, NSW, Australia. A single tree stands high above Great Langdale in the Cumbrian Lake District, against the passing rain clouds, while (OK squint and view the large version lol ) a small flock of birds circle against the clouds. The light just broke through below the tree as I raised the camera. Each time I deliver to the Old Dungeon Ghyll, I always check to see if it has survived the passing seasons.
Image created for and inspired by a vision shared with me by my spirit sister POLLY PEACOCK whose writing accompanies this collaboration, along with our shared favorite song… Wakan Tanka – O Great Mystery – ENIGMA I hold up my maker, to walk when my Maker no longer can, because we both must continue to walk the walk. / I convey words with images of honesty, truth and pride, because they must be shared. / I wear colors of the four corners to honor the coming of Mother Earth’s seasons and many and varied reasons. / I carry a sacred White Wankan Tanka to help me receive visions out of pure necessity. / I am made from an old Sycamore Tree, which speaks tales of old, just as my Maker does. / I have a limb that was torn and broken when my Maker made me; this represents my Maker’s honor of imperfection and humility; I was mended to represent the love and healing that my Maker carries for others. / I am filled with knots, which represent life’s many imbalances; this is so that my Maker may seek harmony in order to live contentedly with frequent imbalances. / I have been woven, braided and wrapped with valued leather and branches from a Weeping Willow Tree; this is to protect my Maker’s inner child and to honor the sacred animals that perished before my Maker and me; the sanctity and blessings of these animals are never wasted among my Maker’s people. / I am hand painted and untouched by a pen or pencil; these were once the most formidable weapons of my Maker’s Ancestors and Elders. / I carry feathers of the Bald Eagle, Goose, Peacock, Doves, and many other winged creatures to remind my Maker to fly high and rise above all storms, to swim with great speed, to honor Grandfather’s teachings and to live for inner peace; these are the things that my Maker shares with those beings who are willing to accept them. / My feathers are proudly decorated with beads of Mother Nature to represent my Maker’s love and respect for all of Daughter Earth’s treasured gems. / I am thrust up into the air by my Maker’s right arm, straight and tall; my Maker cries a primal scream for Creator to send the bright light of the Universe to heal those who are in pain; my Maker then welcomes the light from Creator, who ignites Father Sun, Mother Moon to illuminate and bathe Daughter Earth to spread sacred light; this healing also provides my maker with spirit, innocence, wisdom, integrity, humility and purity; this is one of many visions that my Maker’s sees, feels, trusts and believes. / I wear a broad smile; my Maker cherishes laughter medicine as one of the finest of all. / I dance ritual dances with my Maker; my Maker feels the rhythm of the drums and the heart and soul of songs sung; this stirs and moves my Maker into thoughtless being. / I touch those who would hurt my Maker to accept a challenge if necessary, but my Maker prefers to restore peace. / I am made from Mother Nature with my Maker’s great respect for Creator’s Universe, Father Sun, Mother Moon and Daughter Earth; this is so all beings can live together as one people. / I stand tall and proud as my Maker gazes into Creator’s Universe, during the darkness of each night, praying for universal love, truth, justice, honor, and peace; I represent my Maker’s respect for the equality, healing and energy of all living things. / I am the Coup Stick of my Maker’s visions and realities, which have been lovingly bestowed upon my Maker, by Creator; this is so that my Maker may continue to walk in peace, while immersed in Father Sun, Mother Moon and Daughter Earth’s beauty. Great Smoky Mountains National Park has water falls in many places. When its hot, people head for the hills of the Smokies. / Cool breezes and water. Swimming, fishing, hiking, and driving trails near by. Shop till you drop in Gatlinburg, and walk your dog if he is well behaved. All kinds of things to do and see, good old Tennessee. Piegon Forge is nearby, I know you like to eat, well I couldn’t name them all. Make fun at the way people talk, come on down yeu all. Maybe you haven’t been here yet, watch out for those curvey roads. One of the most visited parks in the good old USA. GSMNP has a tremendous diversity of plant life. Many people document it or just enjoy it. Rhododendron in bloom around the falls, this gorgous shrub is easily seen because it grows well on exposed ridges at 3,000 to 6,000 feet elevation. They grow 8-12 ft. high.and one of the first I added to my garden, along with the natural ones in the woods. They bloom in June and July in the Park, and about a months difference here later. / Oil on canvas JeffeeArt4u

I have fallen in love with our National Parks here in the states after viewing Ken Burns series. I had no idea after just spending time in the Great Smokey National Park how special these parks are and the work that went into creating them. Thank you to all the people that went before and now who had the foresight to protect for us from ourselves to protect these wonders of such spiritual magnitude for us to enjoy. / Tennessee Leica V-Lux 1 HDR in Photomatix, 3 exposures PBS PREVIEWS: NATIONAL PARKS | Extended Preview | PBS
