  • Taken on a section of the Great Wall of China between Jinshanling and Simatai. In the distance you can see the wall rising steeply up over the mountains at Simatai. This got accepted into the ADPA competition in 2007.

  • The sun’s last rays kiss the cliff line on Victoria’s rugged SW coast. / / / more of my seascape related photography can be viewed by clicking on the preview image below /

  • Often the storm chasing day ends not with the last glow of the setting sun, but with a photogenic show of pyrotechnics dancing from cloud to cloud and into the ground and lasting well into the night. This strike was captured just a few miles from my home after a long day of driving and looking for marvelous supercells and their awe-inspiring structures. Typically, any isolated cells that form during the day in western Oklahoma will race through the portions of Oklahoma that I call home, I just have to drive back ahead of the racing squall line and on such days will end the hunt with a tripod and a camera on this gravel road. It isn’t a part of my public offered storm chasing tours, but instead just my time to relax, snap shutters and enjoy my favorite hobby – lightning photography. I’ve always hoped for a dead centered strike at the end of this long gravel driveway. So many times I have closed my eyes and envisioned this very shot. Then, one night in 2006 after a long day’s work of hunting down tornadoes I ended my chase day in this fashion, opened the shutter and waited – “bang” – I had it! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Be sure to check out my company, StormTours.com. It’s a great opportunity for anyone who wants to chase storms to improve their lightning photography skills and see awe-inspiring photogenic storms. www.stormtours.com AND www.stormchase.com

  • Carved By Nature’s Wrath / The 12 Apostles, Victoria Following a day of torrential rain and gale force winds, the sun shone momentarily, lighting up the moody sky, before plunging the rugged coastline into complete darkness. As night falls, a solitary waterfall is all that remains of the passing storms, returning the much needed rain to the swollen seas of the shipwreck coast. • Great Egret searching for food along the bayou.

  • ‘The Twelve Apostles’ coastline of Port Campbell National Park, Victoria, Australia. Photographed by time exposure (for 3hrs) at night by full moon light. / It’s typically very windy along this coastline and I found that a salt covered camera and lens plus slight movement from buffeting winds makes for poor quality and blurred results. So, right weather (pretty rare), full moon, lots of time, sand bags, beanie, and ample coffee were essential. Salt spray build up on the lens and camera wobble over hours ruined earlier attempts at this. / Tomiyama Art Panorama 6×17 cropped, Fuji Velvia film. / © Ern Mainka

  • A section of the coastline at ‘The Twelve Apostles’, Port Campbell National Park, Victoria, Australia. Taken before the collapse in 2005 of the stack in the forground. Photographed at night by time exposure (approx 1 1/2 hrs). / Note: This image is rather soft in focus due to gusty gale force winds and slight camera movement during the exposure even with the tripod anchored down. / Nikon F3, Fuji RDP film. / © Ern Mainka

  • As sure as the sun rises each morning, so it is with God’s Great Faithfulness to watch over, protect and provide for each of us, His children. The dawning of a perfect Autumn day as the sun creeps up through the mist that has settled over Thompson’s Creek, on the historic Charlemont sheep station. Lamentations 3:22-24 (New International Version) / New International Version (NIV) 22 Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, / for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; / great is your faithfulness. 24 I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion; / therefore I will wait for him. The words to the wonderful old hymn penned back in 1923, still stand testament today! Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father; / There is no shadow of turning with Thee; / Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not; / As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be. Refrain Great is Thy faithfulness! / Great is Thy faithfulness! / Morning by morning new mercies I see. / All I have needed Thy hand hath provided; / Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me! Summer and winter and springtime and harvest, / Sun, moon and stars in their courses above / Join with all nature in manifold witness / To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love. Refrain Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth / Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide; / Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, / Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! • This is Denali, also known as Mt. McKinley, taken by my mate-for-life, Howard Marsh, in 2003. Denali is within Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska, some six million acres of wild land with one ribbon of road. Most visitors travel by old, old hard-seat school buses, or ride bicycles or hike. That road is closed to vehicles in order to prevent the effects of too much carbon monoxide, too many people, too much risk to the wildlife. Even air traffic is moderately restricted, although some say not enough restrictions are in place to preserve the peace and quiet. Once a year in the fall, the road opens to a select number of lottery winners. I had done some technical editing and layout work for Denali National Park that year, and was given a vehicle pass. A rare gift. Denali is considered the crowning jewel of the park as North America’s highest peak – an awe-inspiring, 20,320 foot wonder. Mountains and Mountain Light featured – Thank you! Alaska ~ Beyond Your Dreams featured – Thank you! As-Is, untouched scan of film. / / Photo by Howard Marsh

  • A golden moment in between two early morning, rather severe rainstorms near Bellbrae, on The Great Ocean Road. Genesis 9:11-17 (New King James Version) / 11 Thus I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” / 12 And God said: “This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: 13 I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. 14 It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud; 15 and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” 17 And God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.” God’s Promise to Noah, after The Great Flood !!
