There’s nifty Firefox extension called Greasemonkey that lets you customize the way a web page displays using small bits of JavaScript. Hundreds of scripts, for a wide variety of popular sites, are already available at http://userscripts.org , and now there’s one for redbubble. Based on a script for displaying large versions of thumbnails on facebook, I’ve created one that shows large image previews of art and clothing when hovering over most thumbnails and many links on redbubble.com. To give it a whirl, install Firefox (as if you haven’t already), install Greasemonkey (requires browser restart), then install my script (just click on it and Greasemonkey should pick it up) Then when you load a page, hover over a thumbnail or art/clothing link and gasp in amazement at the amount of time you’ve saved not clicking through (which you can still do of course). I got addicted to it very quickly, so much so that I immediately missed it when using another computer. This is a first release and may have a quirk or 3. Comments/feedback welcome here. Update 04JAN08: Fixed the bugs that Xavier reported, writing now works, and the hover disappears when it should. To update, install it again at the link above.

As of changes made to RedBubble on 2009-05-12 this hack is no longer required After messing with yesterday’s edit facility hack I got to thinking that it would be fun to create a Greasemonkey script anyway. So I did This is different from the bookmarklet approach in that it adds the edit facility into the page of the work, like this:

Time for another Greasemonkey hack. This one replaces the existing text formatting hint you get when making comments (the text that pops out when you click on the “Show text formatting help:” link below the comment box). Instead of the rather small bit of help you get webgrrl’s rather handy text formatting cheat sheet. See over here for more details.

Changes made to RedBubble as of 2009-05-12 mean this hack is no longer necessary Another Greasemonkey hack for RedBubble. This one adds a “public view” tab to the row of tabs you see when you’re using mybubble. While there are other ways of getting to your public view (either via the “Things you can do” menu in your main mybubble view, or from the link right at the bottom of the page) this one works well for me because it puts it in a really obvious place: If this sounds handy, and you use Firefox, and you’ve got Greasemonkey installed, pop over here and give the script a go. Edit to add: This isn’t really needed so much now because your user name, up in the top right corner of every page when you’re logged in, is now a link to your public profile.

Yet another Greasemonkey hack for RedBubble. This one adds a Add to Google button to all forum threads. This makes it easier to keep on top of threads you’re active in (if you’re a Google Reader user, obviously). If this sounds handy, and you use Firefox, and you’ve got Greasemonkey installed, pop over here and give the script a go.

  • Hack: "Add to Google Reader" button for all works
    by Dave Pearson

Following on from my forum thread Google reader hack...

Following on from my forum thread Google reader hack, the next obvious one to do was to add the Google reader button to all works so it’s dead easy (for a lazy person like me) to follow a thread of comments on someone’s work. Just like before this one adds a Add to Google button but, this time, it adds it to the action list for a work. This makes it easier to keep on top of comment threads you want to follow (if you’re a Google Reader user, obviously). If this sounds handy, and you use Firefox, and you’ve got Greasemonkey installed, pop over here and give the script a go.

  • Hack: Move user actions further up a user's profile page

Please note that this hack is no longer needed because of recent changes to RB. This thread over in the forums raises an interesting point: wouldn’t it be nice if the user actions for a user’s profile (the actions for adding them to your watchlist or to send them a BubbleMail) were in pretty much the same place all the time. Currently, because they come below the user-supplied part of the profile, and because some user-supplied text can be very long, you’ve got to go hunting down the page to find them. If they always came before the user-supplied text you’d always know where to look. Inspired by this issue I’ve written a Greasemonkey script to solve the problem. So, if you use Firefox, and if you’ve got Greasemonkey installed, have a look over here.

Please note that this hack is no longer needed because the new bubblemail system has a preview facility. Inspired by this thread (although it is a subject that has come up many times before) on the RedBubble forums I’ve created a Greasemonkey script to implement a very simple BubbleMail preview facility. It works by adding a preview button to your screen when you compose a new BubbleMail: When you press the button a preview of your BubbleMail will appear below the button: It’s not perfect. It has some issues. But it’s a start. See over here for more details about the script and to get a copy.

I’ve uploaded version 0.7 of my work editing hack...

I’ve uploaded version 0.7 of my work editing hack. This version fixes a long-standing problem that has existed for some users ever since I released v0.3. The problem was that, for some users, the edit link would no longer appear. Thanks go to Gracey and Cathie Tranent for taking the time to report the problem and also for helping try and track it down. Extra thanks also go to Cathie for actually figuring out what the problem was (failing to do the “is this my work” check with a case-insensitive comparison, d’oh!).

  • Inspired by this thread I’ve knocked up a quick Greasemonkey hack that adds a Friends of RedBubble forum link the the quick links bar in mybubble. This, of course, is only useful to people who use Firefox, have Greasemonkey installed, and who are a member of the FoRB group. If that’s you and this sounds useful then pop over here to get a copy.

Following in the footsteps of Dave Pearson ( RB Profile Here ), I have produced my own Greasemonkey hack attempt. This script implements a visual Textile helper called markItUp on the RedBubble site, and places the helper above all textareas. Installation If you are interested in trying the script, you need to be running Firefox for starters, and you need to install the Greasemonkey addon . Once you have done this, you can fetch the Greasemonkey script from here . If you do try it, please be sure to notify me of any bugs you find. History 0.2 Now uses unpacked jQuery code for compatibility with FF2 / 0.1 First Release

  • GreaseMonkey Script to export your My bubble stats to Excel in CSV format
    by Matt Simner

NOTE: I’ve now created a new script – read about it here...

NOTE: I’ve now created a new script – read about it here I’ve been looking for some more detailed reporting in ‘My Bubble’, so I can track how things move over time, and in response to different ‘events’ – like when I add new items, adding to groups etc. Ultimately we need some reporting tools to export the stats that are shown on the art, t-shirts, calendars, writing and journal pages – to some usable format – or better still some reports (a la Google Analytics (I wish)) that can slice and dice the stats for different time periods. This would really support the ‘commercial’ goals of RedBubblers. Anyway – back to the present day – here’s a GreaseMonkey user script (for Firefox) that plops a table of stats under your ‘works list’ on any of the My bubble pages that gives you stats. The idea is that you simply copy the text and paste it directly into Excel (it’s actually SemiColon delimited) – make sure you paste as Text (older versions need this to be explicitly done through ‘Paste Special’). It shouldn’t need any ‘text to columns’ mucking around. The major drawback at the moment is that you’d need to load each page manually (including page1, page2 etc if you’ve got quite a few works). I’m not aware of any way to force ‘view all’ rather than paged. After Page 1 then you might want to omit the header row. There’s lots of ways this could be made more slick, but it’s probably not worth the technical effort at the moment – I want to encourage RB to provide some reporting capability :) I haven’t worked out exactly how best to use this yet. I still manually grab the ‘summary’ stats most days to see how things are going, and make a note of what I did since the last stats were taken (to try and work out if anything made a positive difference) but at least if I capture this info (with dates) then it can be manipulated somehow. If I come up with anything useful in Excel I’ll post it here. Any suggestions or feedback welcome. Download it from my site, or if that’s down – from my backup (note: the second link requires to you actually save the file first – then just load it into Firefox to install).

  • After the My bubble stats exporter, I thought I might tackle something that I think could be quite useful to a lot of people. Here’s another GreaseMonkey script (for Firefox) that will allow you to take any link or image on the page and quickly grab some text (from a popup) to paste straight into a Redbubble comment/forum/work description etc To generate the popup information you simply need to hold down Ctrl+Shirt then click the link: The following shows what you get under different circumstances: / This shows an ‘image link’. The target url and image have both been taken. You’ll notice a description underneath which is in bold. This is taken from the alt attribute of the image (if it exists), otherwise the title attribute of the link (if it exists) / This shows a simple image (without a link). The image location has just been taken. A description will appear underneath as above if the alt attribute of the image is present. Text links are basically taken as is and presented in the standard format. NOTE: The script was adapted from another GreaseMonkey script called LinkQuery which uses the same keystroke combination so if you happen to use it you’ll need to uninstall it to use this. I’ve also set the script to work by default on only redbubble.com – as there is a slight overhead in the browser each time you load the page. If you want to make it available for any page you browse or on specific sites (e.g. if you put images on flickr or photobucket etc) then once you’ve installed do the following in Firefox: - Tools -> GreaseMonkey -> Manage User Scripts… / - Select the ‘RedBubble link converter’ / - Click ‘Add..’ in the ‘Included Pages’ area on the right of the window and add any websites you want to include (with an * at the end) / - If you want the script to work on all sites then just type ’*’ (without the quotes) / - When you refresh the page in one of the sites you’ve added you should be able to use the script there too. I’ve noticed a few places on Redbuble where things don’t quite work – such as on challenge voting pages. Basically it may not work on links that have script behind them already. Download and install the script from Userscripts.org / Happy linking :)

  • After playing with my original CSV exporter I couldn’t resist trying to improve it somewhat. UPDATE (14/05/2009) : Amended to cater for the new MyBubble layout – no visual changes UPDATE (26/03/2009) : Amended to cater for the new MyBubble page – now look down the right of the page for the little excel icon :) UPDATE (31/12/2008) : Fixed a bug and all my scripts now also available on UserScripts.org UPDATE (24/12/2008) : Now added RB work ‘ID’ and Page number (as requested by Jo). The downside to the original script was that it required you to go onto each ‘works’ page (e.g. clothing p1, p2, art, writing etc) to get the stats for each. This version (named slightly differently on purpose) works only on the My Bubble page, via a sneakily inserted ‘quick link’ called ‘Retrieve CSV Stats’. Just click the link and ‘hey presto’ (after a number of seconds) you should find a number of tables at the bottom of the page with all your current work statistics (clothing, art, writing, calendars, journal) in a semicolon-delimited format (commas are more likely to appear in work titles and screw everything up :) ). The idea is that you simply copy the text and paste it directly into Excel – make sure you paste as Text (older versions need this to be explicitly done through ‘Paste Special’). It shouldn’t need too much ‘text to columns’ mucking around. If you like the sound of this then: Download it from UserScripts. Some people have been very kind in reporting bugs from previous scripts so please post a comment if something goes drastically wrong… PS: For those of a technical disposition it then basically does some rather long-hand processing and retrieves each mybubble works page behind the scenes (using JQuery AJAX), gathers up the stats and then spits them out into separate tables at the bottom of the screen. The tricky bit is grafting together potentially multiple pages of works into one list (something I’d love RB to support as a preference).

After the release today of the new MyBubble, which took probably everyone by surprise, I quickly found that I had to do a bit of work to sort out this script (as I use it every day). Here’s the original journal entry that explains what this is and how to use it. One good thing is that the new MyBubble look has enabled me to make my link look a little sexier… If you just want to update from the previous version then just uninstall the previous one and Download the update from UserScripts. Just a reminder to anyone using any of my Greasemonkey RedBubble hacks: if you see any problems with the new RedBubble please be sure to turn off all of my hacks and test the problem before reporting it to RedBubble—it’s just possible that it’s the hack that’s causing the problem. Please also note that the following hacks are either no longer needed, or just don’t make much sense any more: - The “Edit This” hack. RedBubble have now added this facility. / - The “Public Tab” hack. This doesn’t make much sense any more. / - The extra paging for your works view hack. Again, this doesn’t make much sense any more.

As RB bestowed some loveliness upon us the other day (in the form of a significant makeover) some of my little RB ‘helper’ functions broke (or at least ‘warped’ a bit). For those that don’t know – if you use Firefox to view RB, then one of the excellent addons available to make your life more fragrant is GreaseMonkey .
