Poulnabrone dolmen is a 5,000 year old portal tomb in the limestone Burren area of County Clare, Ireland. The dolmen consists of a massive flat capstone supported on several upright pillars, and would originally have been covered by a mound of earth. Archeological excavations found several traces of human remains at the burial site, which now stands as a stark reminder of an ancient civilisation. Looking back through the mists of time, who knows what ancient religious rites took place at this barren and windswept scene? Winner of the Heritage in Stone group challenge Stone Circles and Standing Stones.
A very colourful graveyard in the market town of chichicastenang, Guatemala.
Soldiers who sacrificed their lives during world war 2 should never be forgetten.
This is another HDR image of the inside of Peterborough cathedral. Peterborough cathedral has seen two Tudor queens buried here, this is Katharine of Aragon’s tomb. The other, Mary Queen of Scots was buried on the opposite side of the altar, though her grave is now empty (she was re-buried in Westminster in 1612)

In the sallow twilight of dusk I sit, / silent and soundless. I’m listening to the rustling leaves, / getting lost in the song of the wind whistling through the trees. I try to be very quiet, my breathing decelerates, / my heart beat winds down. Silent now – almost without a sound – I am sitting here, / swaying to and fro like a straw in the wind. I am listening deep inside of me, / calm I am! / My blood rushes through my body, / like a mountain stream after a thunderstorm. Still getting calmer, listening, / I hear the rain drops clutching to earth almost withouth a sound. I hear the crescendo of the impact when a drop hits the earth. / Hear the gargling sound when it sinks into the ground. Thievishly I follow its way through the arteries of Mother Earth, / I float and swim through the odorous soil. Deeper and deeper I am dragged. / Suddenly there is silence around … I hover in total silence! / Can hardly breath, I am deaf … But then I notice – it isn’t silent here, / I have just become part of the pulse. Steadily the pulse is beating … / silence! * / Written on 15th January 2004 – so it is a bit older. Picture taken on Melaten cemetary, Cologne! / It is so peaceful there …

A photograph of a lipstick heart drawn on Oscar Wilde’s grave in the Pere Lachaise cemetary, Paris. The grave is covered in kisses from admirers. Some minor adjustments were made to the contrast. Taken with a compact Canon IXUS 80.

Impressive tomb at Kilcoona cemetery in co. Galway, Ireland The cemetery is quite small, and most of the graves have been shattered during the past centuries with only bits and pieces lying around, but this tomb still stands. HDR from 1 RAW image processed in photomatix, and added taxture layer in PS + final tweaking.
