Now that I am older, I appreciate the message in the song even more. There are times when my ongoing bout with cancer may place my thoughts and spirits in a bad place, and listening to this song when I am feeling that way makes me smile and feel so grateful for all the wonderful things that life has been kind enough to award me. Hopefully Cat’s words will do the same for you, and the artwork will bring back these words of Cat’s when you find yourself in a bad place. / / “Moonshadow” is a song from the album ‘Teaser and the Firecat’, released by Cat Stevens in 1971. Stevens wrote this about finding hope in any situation. Be present and joyful. See life as it is, right now, and don’t compare it to other’s lives, or other times in your life. Let me tell you a story. / About something that has blown me away. / And I don’t want to embarrass Travis Easton by telling you this. I want to applaud him. Some of you know about the world’s most expensive card campaign. This card is marked up 999% so that when people buy it for $33 or so the $30 mark up goes straight to HEAL Africa Many of you guys have got on board and purchased this card and in its own right it’s raised around $600 +. My thanks as always to JR who came up with the idea in the first place and Adrian Carmody who pushed it hard. Well last night Travis bought the world’s most expensive card…as a framed print. Now in case the maths is as hard for you as it is for me, that means the mark up comes to $799.00 He then went on to buy this black and white as a framed print, the mark up of which comes to $40. The grand total of all the mark up comes to $839.99 and I can promise you every single cent of that will go to HEAL Africa. I will scan in the receipt upon payment. That alone will provide 2 life saving and changing fistula operations. If you want to read about that you can check out my post here In total the photography sales and a few other things have provided 7 fistula operations, a few mosquito nets and a cataract operation. The point of this journal entry is to say thanks to Travis. This is not about me, it never has been. It’s about the generosity of people. People I haven’t even met but have come to know and respect in virtual friendships. People who don’t mind peeling off the layers to their soul and allow their spirit to breathe and add breath to the displaced, the beaten and the frightened. All I had to do was take the shots, it’s people like Trav and so many others who take the step… Please I encourage you to send this to as many people as you can. There’s a saying someone once told me (Travis it was Phil Cogger maybe you know him?)... “It’s all very well to be moved. It’s much more important to move.” I love it. Bowing his head as if in prayer, this thoughtful study of a wild Bald Eagle seems so appropriate to convey the theme of Gratitude. Giving thanks whether through prayer or through action, is one of the most powerful gestures a person can make. The lasting impression created by a grateful attitude is wonderful to behold. This scene was created from two photographs taken recently in British Columbia, Canada, just 32 miles from Alaska, as the sun was setting behind a creeping ocean fog rolling in from Haida Gwaii. A pensive Bald Eagle flew in and just sat there in silence, as I took his photograph. Nature is such a consumate artist and did most of the creative work for me in this image. 25% of all proceeds from the sale of this item, is donated directly to the excellent folks at IFAW (The International Fund for Animal Welfare). / Thank you for helping us to help them. Roses and colours / Here’s a brief mention about the significance of rose colours and combinations: •Red: An expression of love; a symbol of courage and respect / •Pink: Admiration; a new love that has yet to bloom, appreciation, motherly love / •White: Innocence, purity, secrecy, marriage, loyalty, reverence and humility / •Yellow: Joy and deep friendship or platonic love. It could also denote jealousy, infidelity, a dying love and farewell. / •Blue: Mystery, the impossible and the unattainable / •Purple: Love at first sight, enchantment and all things magical Yellow roses have a shorter, albeit no less fascinating, history than other roses. It wasn’t until around the 18th century that yellow roses were discovered growing naturally in parts of the Middle East. Prior to this, roses in cultivation predominantly existed in various shades of pink and to a lesser extent, white. However, once the first yellow roses were introduced, their popularity quickly spread. Also changed over the years were the meanings related to yellow roses. Throughout history, the color yellow has been closely associated with the sun. As the source of light and warmth, the sun is integral to life on Earth, and has been worshiped in many early societies. It should come as no surprise that the color of the sun would hold many positive connotations. In many Eastern cultures, for example, the color yellow represents joy, wisdom and power. However, in Europe at the time of the introduction of these roses, the color yellow carried much more negative overtones. Consequently, yellow roses were long used as a symbol for jealousy and dying love. As time went on, however, the more universal meanings connected with the color yellow have come to prevail and entwine themselves with the yellow rose. Today yellow roses are more commonly associated with joy and friendship. A rose is a perennial flower shrub or vine of the genus Rosa, within the family Rosaceae, that contains over 100 species and comes in a variety of colors.
