  • I took this shot in November 2006, eight months after a bushfire ravaged the southern end of Wilsons Promontory. The Austral Grass Tree (Xanthorrhoea Australis) generally only sprouts its fantastic golden kangaroo tail after being burnt and the fire also created the additional advantages of opening up the view to South-east Point and clearing away the obscuring foliage around the grass tree itself. With these factors and the basic composition for this shot clear in my minds eye, I started my search. Of the thousands of grass trees I saw I found this relatively unobscured view of the Lighthouse but once. For more shots from this area check out my Wilsons Promontory gallery. • Driving through the recently burnt out Porongurup Ranges, we came upon an expanse of these gorgeous Western Australia Grass Trees (Xanthorrhoea) – unique and totally different to those we’d ever seen before. The Grass Tree’s were the only living thing after a devastating fire – thriving in the ashes! / (Shutter Speed 1/2000; F-Stop 2.8)

  • Two grasstree flower spikes. One new spike spirals around the one year old one.

  • I was looking for birds and came across this lovely butterfly instead. /

  • Aussie bush with a bronze effect…. DebsPhotos

  • This is the shattered trunk of a Blackboy or Grasstree plant!! when they have died the trunk shatters apart into these fragments and has quiet a nice smell…. DebsPhotos

  • Grasstrees put out a massive flower stalk in Spring. These can be several meters long. I went to photograph them at John Forrest National Park but was a couple of weeks late and the flowers were dying off. A storm had recently gone through and many of the old flower stalks had been blown over. Usually the flower stalks are straight but sometimes they are curved and twisted. I noticed that the texture of the flower stalks resembeled the granite boulder that they grow in between in the park. Collecting several interesting flowers I put them onto granite boulders. Not sure what I would come up with until I got the images up on the computer. Hope you like the nine panel work.

  • This ancient Grass Trees (Xanthorrhoea) grow in Australia only. The striking, very slow growing plant has a lifespan of 600 years and it takes decades to grow to this height. This photo was taken near Cervantes, Western Australia. Framing suggestion: / © aabz-imaging / ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

  • I loved the contrast between these two trees .. a young grasstree & the older tree (eucalypt I presume) which has had it’s base undermined. Dharug National Park, north of Sydney, Australia.

  • This scene is interesting, as grasstrees are normally considered part of the tropical flora. / Barrington Tops
