  • Stripped of her beauty, she stands alone, firm and strong. / Falling into sleep as Autumn fades. A time to restore her energy spent. / The cold and bitter winds of winter encircle her, testing her. / But she is safe, her armour protecting her, securing her delicate core from the many elements, shielding her from harm. / The rings of time hardened around her, embracing her, allowing her to sleep without worry. / As every day passes, she will take from the sun, bask in the light of the moon and quench her thirst from the soil drawing strength from her foundations, allowing her to grow. / When the time is right and the warmth of the earth awakens her spirit she will yet again show us her splendour. Give us her beauty. /

  • I’ve was sprinting back and forth across our yard the past few nights… pointing my camera towards the glorious sunsets in the West and then racing to the back pasture to capture the astonishing moon rise in the East. It has been a fun couple of evenings and I am having a hard time deciding which images to post. I liked this one in particular because the grass blade feels like it helps anchor the moon at the earths horizon. When the moon first appears it is blood red… (I haven’t processed those pictures yet!) and it is ENORMOUS!! That is one of my favorite moments though, when it seems like heaven and earth are so close. / Photographed in southeastern South Dakota

  • Taken at around 12 AM in my yard. / The grass was due covered and I used an external flash to light up the background.

  • What do you call the light that permanently imprints itself into the deepest corner of your cerebral real estate? Just a memorable one, divine, sublime? The star was going down fast, as it was just a matter of ‘to get it over and done with‘ a daily sunset routine – until that moment. Like it was switched on by some all powerful hand residing somewhere in the center of a kingdom of light, the sunbeam reached across the valley, bringing all the associated attributes with it, like joy and warmth, just for a few moments, before disappearing altogether. The blue cold haze drowned the beautiful Hawkes Bay valley, but not before the last ray of sun got there first. I was standing in awe … for a while in fact, still in disbelief. Review button and LCD screen confirmed it did happen. Sweet. I’ll treasure selfishly the melody of breeze passing through the treetops, the smell of golden grass and feel of fallen leafs under my feet. Not to worry, I left something to share with you. Here it is.

  • I wonder if there’s a Heaven / Do the beautiful winged angels fly / Above the woods and sunlit gardens / Of their Utopia in the sky And sing with the larks in the morning / Their carols of love and of joy / Long years ago I dreamt such things of great beauty / when I was an innocent boy Back then I was nearer to Heaven / Far nearer than I am today / Since I have lost the innocence of childhood / Heaven from me seems much further away I wonder if there is a Heaven / Do birds sing on the blossoming trees / And do the rivers from their homes in the mountains / Sing their way to the Heavenly seas. crouching model by lamanouche.

  • One of 26 images for a new manuscript for a children’s picture book…… this is a combination of photography, vector, drawings and a special recipe for the overall effect. I wanted to stay with the shadows because I love the challenge of allowing little ones to use their imagination to visualize the character they want to see. I started this manuscript with my youngest as my inspiration, she loves cupcakes. I had a blast writing the Lilliput picture book and my kids really enjoyed it. I am really proud of all the hard work and how it turned out and I cannot wait until it finds a home at a house. Until then I want to keep writing and make up the illustrations. I love the challenge and the expression on my kids faces with the images that I turn out. btw…. / The cupcake is actually a first attempt over a year ago to design vector art. I never deleted it, thank goodness :).

  • 3200 ISO is a brave new world for me. As a self confessed low ISO junkie, one who used Ektar 25 film whenever and wherever he could for many years because I wanted tight grain, the tighter the better, I would pull out all the stops I could to use that amazing ISO 25 film! For sure I’d never gone above ISO 1000 and then only to shoot indoor sporting events. Low ISO was(?) a hang-up for me! But I wanted to try astral photography and high ISO can get you there! However as we all know high ISO leads to increased noise which is something fairly new to me. You can use software and Photoshop plugins but I’ve been considering, one way to control noise would be to minimize or eliminate it by keeping the ISO as low as possible and that’s one way I‘m leaning. So in that regard it looks like a fast 50 prime is in order! It’s fun to be experimenting and learning, eh! Camera Model Canon EOS 50D / Tv( Shutter Speed ) 30 / Av( Aperture Value ) 3.5 / ISO Speed 3200 / Focal Length 18.0mm / Flash at 1/16 power and about 12 or 13 paper towels for diffusion. “One Night Under the Milky Way” was shot at Flamber Head on Newfoundland’s East Coast Trail For more information please visit Brian’s Homepage or on Flickr
