if it seems like i’ve been on major hiatus, it’s ‘cause i have been. one of my best friends flew in from dallas last week and i’ve been hanging out with him a lot. and by “a lot”, i mean “all the time”, so i haven’t really been on the computer for any reason at all. my deviantart message box is overflowing. i even got some activity here. awesome! i’m in new orleans right now. been here since…eh…uhm…sunday. yeah. we spent a night at the beach (on a boat!) last saturday night. the wine flowed. came in to new orleans the next day while parades were going on. that sucked. we drove around for more than two hours, trying to get around road blocks. finally found our way to my dad’s house (in the irish channel, where we are staying) and decided that we were really too tired for mardi gras festivities. monday night was pretty badass. we had a good spot right next to avenue pub. st. charles wasn’t overly crowded (considering). i got pretty hammered and beaded the fuck out. mardi gras day, however, i was pretty dead. we caught some of the zulu parade at the beginning of that day and tried to start drinking, but the past week has been pretty much a blur of alcohol and weed and it hadn’t caught up with me until late morning. plus, our beer was getting warm and the parade wasn’t moving a whole lot. st. charles was almost bourbon street-like as far as people-to-walking-space ratio, and the weather was hot and muggy. you can see mardi gras on TV and think “wow, that’s a lot of people” or “wow, that’s a pretty big party” or whatever, but you can’t actually understand how it shuts down the city until you’ve been here during mardi gras and then during a normal day (i’m in new orleans about once a month for one reason or another). first off – mardi gras day (fat tuesday) is an actual bigger-than-christmas holiday. even wal-mart closes. getting just about anywhere in the city is a pretty big task, even if you’re walking. parking? forget about it. find a spot and stay there. prices of food and alcohol go up, which sucks. restaurants will completely reformat to accommodate the clusterfuck of tourists that are crawling the city (my dad’s place is usually a sit-down-and-be-served restaurant but it adopted buffet). everyone is drunk. it’s pretty fucking nuts. two important pieces got damaged on the trip over here. fortunately, they’re both fixable. been really into cigars lately. that, combined with my affinity for scotch, makes me feel like an old man. it’s all good, though. old men are onto something.
