This is a “pencil” of William F. Cody in his later years. This piece was drawn using a very obscure photograph for reference that Karchner obtained from an anonymous source in Washington, D.C. This “pencil” is soon to be archived in the Buffalo Bill Historical Centers private library. For a library of 250,000 photos, the BBHC was shocked they had never seen this portrait of Cody. What a find on Karchners’ part! paper size: 8.5” x 11” / Graphite pencil drawing on paper. Artist: Tony Ryan called his photo :Wisdom” but I have titled the drawing from his photo “Grace 2” since this is the second drawing based on his beautiful work. I hope he pleased with what I have done. I only hope I was able to capture a small percents of her true beauty.
This is a series I started shortly after my older brother Darren’s wedding in March this year. / I couldn’t afford a wedding present for him and I felt terrible about it, so I decided to start drawing a belated wedding present for them. / This is the work that I am most proud of to date. / I started the first one in April and finished the last one in June. / It was an epic body of work that I had to keep going back to between commisions. I have been dying to post this first installment since I finished it on April 20th 2009, but restrained myself until all three were completed. / Special thanks to Mark at Perceptions Photography for giving me permission to use the reference photo (which you can see on his website) Graphite Mechanical Pencils 3H, HB, 2B on Reeves A4 white sketch paper Completed 20th April, 2009

Pencil on Arches watercolor paper / Greek mythology – Daphne / According to Greek myth, Apollo chased the nymph Daphne. The Olympian god’s infatuation was supposedly caused by an arrow from Eros, who wanted to make Apollo pay for making fun of his archery skills and to demonstrate the power of love’s arrow. / Daphne prays for help either to the river god Peneus or to Gaia, and is transformed into a laurel (Laurus nobilis): “a heavy numbness seized her limbs, thin bark closed over her breast, her hair turned into leaves, her arms into branches, her feet so swift a moment ago stuck fast in slow-growing roots, her face was lost in the canopy. Only her shining beauty was left.” The laurel became sacred to Apollo, and crowned the victors at the Pythian Games. Most artistic impressions of the myth focus on the moment of transformation.

Graphite (2b to 8b) on A3 UPM Digi 190gsm white paper. I donated a portrait as a fundraiser for my son’s kindy. I’m so pleased that this family won the raffle – the little girl, aged 4, is just adorable and her Mum has done lots for the kindy. It was a huge undertaking though – took me ages. I’m not really happy with the scan as I think you lose detail (but this always seems to be the case!). Winner of Avatar Challenge in “Pencil Drawing” Dec 09. Top Ten in “Best Works on Paper” Challenge Nov 09. Featured in the groups: Graphite Pencil Artists, Art Up Close and Love For Your Children, Nov 09 and Fine Arts, Dec 09.
