I have been contemplating it for some time, I guess just trying to brush up on my skills first. / I believe that every artist must do at least one self portrait, so I figured my first would have to incorporate my first love, music into the theme. / This was somewhat of a challenge, firstly because this is the way people see me, whereas I am so used to seeing a mirrored version of myself; my eyebrow ring is on the right in the mirror and my scar on my chest from when both my lungs collapsed when I was 16, etc. / Also I realised that I hate drawing bloody guitars! the strings, frets and tiny numbers on the knobs are way too detailed even for my pool of patience. The guitar in Elvis Costello wasn’t so bad because i only had to do a tiny section of two of the strings, but ah oh well, these are the challenges we artists have to conquer in order to improve :) / I took my own reference photos using the timer on my digital camera, and lots of different poses. This one I had on my ‘to do’ list for a while, but I kept putting it off because I knew it was going to be a challenge. / Once I started it however, it eventually came together bit by bit. / It is my daughter Chloe being her naturally radiant and colourful self. / For the first time i used no blending tools; no tissue, no paper stumps. This is all done with pencil strokes only!!! This is the one that the eye in Her Eyes Couldn’t Help But Be Drawn In… was the beginning of. Colour pencil, graphite and pastel on paper. 19×25 cm. It’s been hard finding personal drawing time of late. She has been ‘in the making’ for about 5 weeks. It feels nice to have a piece finished. Hope to start a new one today.
