I’m a HUGE techno fan and a while ago I was wanting to have a shirt with this design on it, but I haven’t ever found a shop that had this design on any of their shirts so I took it upon myself to make the design myself. The insipration came from seeing a Dj, or several at local bars and seeing their turntables and amps with the lights on them. Whoever has been to see a Dj knows it gets pretty hot inside the place and if its really good techno or dance music, you don’t really feel like slowing down so this is where the name “Techno Heat” comes from. Hanbei was a greengrocer from Osaka who married Ochiyo, a village beauty. There love was so strong their story became a village legend. Hanbei’s spiteful mother Omine tormented his new wife with scorn and disdain, so much so that the young couple chose to commit suicide, though Ochiyo was with child. / Perhaps they felt their love would live on, in yet another life? This is an interpretation of a Picasso painting called Le Rêve Its first title was “When Aretha Met Pablo” because I was listening to Aretha Franklin when I worked on it. But ultimately, I decided it was too descriptive and it doesn’t represent the original idea successfully, so I changed it to “iDream Therefore iAm”. It’s an artistic commentary on consumerist culture. At the time there were a lot of folks that were literary mad about iPods and the Internet was full with self portraits by people hugging, kissing and caressing those devices. I found it slightly irritating at first but then I tried to find a more rational explanation for this odd behavior. Those devices are designed an marketed as something sexy, special and intimate. Especially the iPhone and the iPod touch – half of the magic about them comes from the ability to hold them in your hand and make them do things using your fingertips… I don’t know about any other product in history who has such a potential to seduce your subconsciousness in such an aggressive, brutal manner. At the same time, Picasso’s painting was representing a yearning of a woman, probably obsessed with the thought of a man and that’s how I made the connection. It’s not about ridiculing iPods or anything else (I have two of them myself), it’s about translating an idea and moving it to another dimension – an approach I find extremely inspirational.
