  • Διόνυσος: I begin to sing of ivy-crowned Dionysus, the loud-crying god, splendid son of Zeus and glorious Semele. The rich-haired Nymphs received him in their bosoms from the lord his father and fostered and nurtured him carefully in the dells of Nysa, where by the will of his father he grew up in a sweet-smelling cave, being reckoned among the immortals. But when the goddesses had brought him up, a god oft hymned, then began he to wander continually through the woody coombes, thickly wreathed with ivy and laurel. And the Nymphs followed in his train with him for their leader; and the boundless forest was filled with their outcry. And so hail to you, Dionysus, god of abundant clusters! Grant that we may come again rejoicing to this season, and from that season onwards for many a year. / —Homeric Hymn to Dionysos.26.1–10 More Olympians / / / /

  • From Aesop’s Fables: A famished Fox crept into a vineyard where he spied a cluster of ripe, luscious grapes draped high upon the arbor. He took a run and a jump, and just missed the bunch. Again and again he tried to reach the tasty prize, but with no greater success. At last he had to admit defeat and he walked away muttering to himself, “What does it matter, I’m sure those grapes are sour anyway!” Moral: It is easy to despise what you cannot have. • Entry for the Winery Photo & Description of Your Favourite Wine Challenge Last week in the 40 degree heat, we visited Boynton’s Feathertop Winery on the Great Alpine Road in Porepunkah, Vic. Winery Description / Established in 1989 by Kel Boynton, Feathertop remains a family owned business. / Their wines capture the essences of nature and the beauty and crispness of the Alpine Valleys. / The name Feathertop is derived from Mount Feathertop which is the commanding feature in the region, Alpine Valleys. / The mountain shelters the valley and influences the air currents. It has defined the soil structure in which the grapes are grown and provides fresh Alpine spring water for the vines. / In 2005 they started a wine club, and have only recently named it ‘Summit Cru’. Summit referring to the pinnacle of Mount Feathertop and the quintessence of their wines, and Cru “the best of the vintage”. Cru, as in crew, also carries a double meaning as Kel (the winemaker) has a rowing history. / ...and after tasting their selection ~ we joined Summit Cru ! Favourite Wine / My pick on the day was the 2006 Feathertop Merlot. Not normally a favourite for me, as I usually like fuller bodied wines, I was really surprised with this wine. With a lovely plummy nose and a wonderful berry finish, it was a sure winner for me. / But I am looking forward to when my wine club case comes, there is a $70 reserve Shiraz in there which I haven’t tasted yet!!
