my mom and my grandpa at sunset
This is my grandfather on the left, with one of his cousins. Grandpa was about five years old here, making the year around 1912. I love his long locks! He was born in Texas, was on a horse when he proposed to my grandmother. He was well known for his ability to predict the exact time of day, month, and moon-phase for planting each crop grown. / We lost grandpa in 1968, but his photo hung in my grandmother’s living room until her death in 1986. He had told grandma if there was any way for him to come back, it would be as a bird. She waited years for a sign, and that year, she pointed out to me that a bird had built it’s nest in her bathroom window, and that she had been dreaming about him on a regular basis. / She loved him so much that when she had her heart attack, she wouldn’t let my mother get close to the phone to call an ambulance. Instead, she lay down on her bed, with my mother’s arms around her, and went on to meet up with grandpa. / He was just that kind of man. I miss him very much.

http://www.redbubble.com/people/maf04 / maf04 whom I invited to come here to RB. Somebody I know and admire from www.dailypics.com, which is a much smaller community but just as welcoming and just as encouraging. I recommend DP to anybody who does mostly photography. / / It’s bloody hot here, and yes, I know it’s a cuss-word of the blasphemous order. It was 86 F in the shade, so it was 100+ F in the sun. Add 20 degrees to that for the heat of the road, and it was bloody hot out there! Our grandson, aged 2.5 yrs, opened his second story window, pushed out the screen and sailed out after it. Fortunately, though he takes after his grandafather in the “Houdini” department, he also takes after Kelly in the hard-headed department, and all he had was a little bump on his head. / Did he learn his lesson? Apparently so: Flying’s fun, and the landing’s not bad on the lawn—which meant that he almost beat them to his window to go out it again when they got home from the hospital. / They immediately called us, called Kelly, “Daddy, he’s your grandson!”, and he went up today to lock down the window. He took his manual wheelchair to use in their apartment, and literally dragged his bum up the stairs to the second-story (first for Europe and such) apartment. Then he scooted back down on his bum. They knew the other grandpa was too well-behaved to have been that stubborn, so he wouldn’t know how to Houdini-proof the window. One secure little boy, for now. / Till he tries something else crazy.
This is my father Lex and my son Thomace / [on the occasion of my father’s 80th – July 2008] Both men are so endearing to me and so special to the Melbourne community, that to lose either of them would be horribly devastating, a truely unique pair! You have met my father before and I shall write soon to commemorate my son’s 18th & his attributes thus far. / I am blessed by all my family as we all are, but these two Keep me Happy! / Thank you for letting me share these two with you :O) Chookas! X♥X [PS – not bad for a 3P amateur on a camera phone hey! :O)]

This is a tributary work to my grandfather. It started as a poem and is now in more of a song format but I haven’t put any music to it. It’s difficult to work with because it’s so close to my heart. I am truly honored by my grandfather and the men and women like him who serve our country. / MCN:C418C-2486F-81FA6 If you have someone you would like to honor Please go here & post a square for them
My dad (at age 45) and my daughter, Shannon (at age 2-1/2) in August 1981 at my younger sister’s wedding. Dad’s 73 now and Shannon is 30. 3rd, but she’ll always be “Grandpa’s Girl.” When Shannon got married 2 years ago, she danced with her Grandpa. For Christmas, Shannon sent him a double frame with this photo on one side, and her dancing with him at her own wedding on the other side. It is proudly displayed on his television set.
That is how he responded to my husband making faces.
My 2nd-great-grandfather, Isaac Chapman. His wife, my 2nd great-grandmother, Mary Alice Cooksey, was a 2nd cousin to Virginia Cooksey, the mother of famous lawman, Wyatt Earp. Isaac was digging sewers for the City when he was trapped in a cave-in. (uploaded photo for a specific challege) ============================================================ / Newspaper account of Isaac Chapman’s death: Connersville (Indiana) Daily Examiner, Wednesday, October 19, 1910. ISAAC CHAPMAN KILLED IN DITCH / Met Death Almost Instantly In Cave-In ENGAGED IN LAYING TILE Fellow workers Extricated Body From Debris … Andy Wissel, Employed With Him, Received Severe Bruises. Isaac Chapman, aged about sixty-two years, met death about five o’clock last evening while laying tile in a ditch just below the lower foundry. The bank of the ditch, which was about six feet deep, caved in, catching Mr. Chapman in the avalanche of dirt and pinning him to the ground. Three other men who were working with him at the time rushed to his assistance and found him entirely covered, excepting his head, which protruded from the pile of debris. Some of the foundry employees and some tile drivers just below also hurried to the scene and in a very short time succeeded in extricating his body, death having occurred before he could be gotten out. Andy Wissel, who was working near Mr. Chapman, was slightly bruised on one shoulder by the fall of debris. Although able to be out today his injuries are causing him pain. After the coroner’s examination the body of Mr. Chapman was taken to the undertaking rooms of Charles Thompson and later to the residence on west Ninth street. Mr. Chapman was born at Cedar Grove, Ind., sixty-one years ago last February. About twelve years ago he came to this city where has since resided and made himself known to a large circle of friends. He is survived by a widow and seven children. They are Mrs. John Siebert, Mrs. Norman Shaw, Floyd, Earl and Clyde of this city, Howard of Indianapolis and Roy of Youngstown, O. The funeral will be held at the residence at 2:30 o’clock tomorrow afternoon. Rev. L.O. Newcomer officiating. The men were in the employ of Neal & Stoll, the plumbers and the ditch they were digging was for the city sewer system. Coroner Spicely has not yet completed his investigation and inquest and will probably not render a verdict before Friday. OBITUARY: The Daily Examiner, Connersville, Ind., Thursday October 20, 1910, Page 1. ISAAC CHAPMAN WAS LAID TO REST TO-DAY The funeral of Isaac Chapman, who was killed Tuesday evening in a cave-in near the foundry, was held at 2:30 o’clock this afternoon at the late residence on west Ninth street. Rev. L.O. Newcomer of the Central Christian church officiated. Mrs. V.J. Barker and Mrs. Frank Runyan sang some beautiful and impressive selections. The cortege then moved to the city cemetery where interment was made. The pallbearers were Charles Ray, George Gregg, William Hubbell, Mike Redman, William Goodwin and Albert Buckley.

I’m putting this here as another example of the beauty of crow quill, which I love. Isn’t it wonderful that we can see so much in a few scratches of line? This was an illustration for a poem published by Dimuendo Press. (Book titled Minstrel’s Musing by Sarah Ashwood.) This is also the kind of work you might do for hire; I was paid $15 for this picture, did forty pictures for the book and was paid $350 for the entire book. Small Press! I would love to keep doing art for publication like this, but it would be nice to be paid ten times as much…hah! I keep hearing people talk about talent-there is no such thing, really, seriously, and really again. If you do 300 pictures a year, you get better, or go somewhere, maybe to the loony bin. If you want to be good at soccer, you practice every day-why not art? If you’re considering illustration, remember that you must do 40 illustrations in two months. Four or five a week. This picture took about five hours to do. The only way to get to this place is to draw—a lot! When I started, I knew nothing and I scribbled in crayons, like everyone else. I think I’ve put in about 30,000 hours doing art, mostly because I’ve had to work full time while on this journey. But I love crow quill, the scratching of the pen, the fine line (which doesn’t come across as well here) the white paper turning into something wise and fine and wonderful. Or it goes in the trash. About six out of ten of my pieces go in the trash and only one in 100 goes here.

Oh, my goodness! Two features in a row! “Holy suffering succatash!” I want to say how thankful I am to receive features for both my maternal Grandmother and Grandfather. I am sure they would be tickled to death if they could see this. Please extend my thanks and gratitude to everyone involved. WOW.

Take heart brothers and sisters. There is a lot in this world that is so hard to understand, fills us all with sadness and despair. But the power of love and the understanding that we really are all one WILL prevail. Listen to this, another episode in the Playing for Change series ‘Change is Gonna Come’ Peace.
