Walking is the main form of locomotion on land, the word walking is derived from the Old English walkan (to roll). Walking is generally distinguished from running in that only one foot at a time leaves contact with the ground: for humans and other bipeds running begins when both feet are off the ground with each step. The average human child achieves independent walking ability between nine and fifteen months old.

It’s a rainy day / Looking for simple pleasures, think of the things we easily toss away. / That’s right a moment for ourselves, a friend, Grandma, Auntie, or Cousin Faye? / Whom ever it is, remember this little phrase. / Most of what I ever learned was over a simple cup of tea and I’m glad I still stop and have one by myself of with any of the above including my own children, because that few moments you get is worth a long days pay! / Lei H / 1-22-09

Calla Lilies (Zantedeschias) make good house plants with attractive brilliant white flowers and heart or arrow-shaped leaves. Zantedeschia is a genus of herbaceous flowering plants in the family Araceae, native to southern Africa from South Africa north to Malawi. The name of the genus was given as a tribute to Italian botanist Giovanni Zantedeschi (1773-1846) by the German botanist Kurt Sprengel (1766 – 1833). Common names include Arum lily for Z. aethiopica, calla, and calla lily for Z. elliottiana and Z. rehmannii although it is neither a true lily (Liliaceae), nor Arum or Calla (related genera in Araceae). It is also often erroneously spelled as “cala lily”. It has often been used in many paintings, and is visible in many of Diego Rivera’s works of art (see The Flower Vendor, amongst others). The Zantedeschia are rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plants growing to 1-2.5 m tall with leaves 15-45 cm long. The inflorescence is a showy white, yellow or pink spathe shaped like a funnel with a yellow, central, finger-like spadix. The Zantedeschia species are very poisonous, capable of killing livestock and children. “All parts of the plant are toxic, and produce irritation and swelling of the mouth and throat, acute vomiting and diarrhea.” T-shirts, Unique Gifts, Posters, Art and more! / At my ZAZZLE store Female Contemporary Art you can instantly create and customise my art to your own personal style. / / / My zazzle gallery has a premium range of gifts that are suitable for people of all ages and tastes: an eclectic collection of unusually imaginative, hip and sometimes beautiful designs. Photograph of Passion Flower taken 13 May 2009. Information courtesy of Wikipedia here The passion flowers or passion vines (Passiflora) are a genus of about 500 species of flowering plants, the namesakes of the family Passifloraceae. They are mostly vines, with some being shrubs, and a few species being herbaceous. For information about the fruit of the passiflora plant, see passionfruit. The monotypic genus Hollrungia seems to be inseparable from Passiflora, but further study is needed. Popularly, passionflowers and especially passionfruit are frequently used with sexual or romantic innuendo, giving rise to such uses as a one-time soft drink named Purple Passion. The “Passion” in “passion flower” does not refer to sex and love however, but to the passion of Jesus Christ. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Spanish Christian missionaries adopted the unique physical structures of this plant, particularly the numbers of its various flower parts, as symbols of the last days of Jesus Christ and especially the Crucifixion. To learn more about the symbolism of the Passion flower scroll to the bottom of the page! The pointed tips of the leaves were taken to represent the Holy Lance. / The tendrils represent the whips used in the Flagellation of Christ. / The ten petals and sepals represent the ten faithful apostles (less St. Peter the denier and Judas Iscariot the betrayer). / The flower’s radial filaments, which can number more than a hundred and vary from flower to flower, represent the Crown of Thorns. / The chalice-shaped ovary with its receptacle represents a hammer or the Holy Grail / The 3 stigmata represent the 3 nails and the 5 anthers below them the 5 wounds (four by the nails and one by the lance). / The blue and white colors of many species’ flowers represent Heaven and Purity. The flower has been given names related to this symbolism throughout Europe since that time. In Spain, it is known as espina de Cristo (“Christ’s Thorn”). Old German names are Christus-Krone (“Christ’s Crown”), Christus-Strauss (“Christ’s Bouquet”, Dorn-Krone (“Crown of Thorns”), Jesus-Leiden (“Jesus’ Passion”), Marter (“Passion” or Muttergottes-Stern (“Mother of God’s Star”. Outside the Christian heartland, the regularly-shaped flowers have reminded people of the face of a clock; in Israel they are known as “clock-flower” (שעונית), and in Japan they are called tokeisō (時計草, “clock plant”). In Hawaiian, they are called lilikoʻi; lī is a string used for tying fabric together, such as a shoelace, and liko means “to spring forth leaves”. In northern Peru and Bolivia, the banana passionfruits are known as tumbos. This is one possible source of the name of the Tumbes Region of Peru.

Historical photographs of women from various ethnic groups that inhabit the mountains of north Thailand, northeast Burma and northwest Laos, the infamous Golden Triangle. These images are from the 1970s and 1980s, before major changes engulfed the traditional hilltribe societies and their isolation from the outside world was lost forever.
The basis of this work was a photocopy of a photograph of my grandparents, Emma Brownell and Leonard French, my mother’s parents. I scanned the photocopy and increased the contrast somewhat. Several weeks later I decided to colorize the photograph which I’d never done before. My grandfather was pretty bald when I knew him so I didn’t really know what color his hair was. I never knew my grandmother. She died when my mother was 18. Ordinarily I would turn this to a black and white or sepia, but I love the color look of how this turned out. My mother was born in 1916 so I assume this photograph was taken prior to her birth, maybe as an engagement picture. 124 views as of December 29, 2009 Check out my other portraits / “Emma and Leonard” was featured in: / OUT OF THE PAST/July, 2009 / RETRO CONGLOMERATE/August, 2009 / Chosen as the August Avatar in NOSTALGIC ART AND PHOTOGRAPHY/ August, 2009 FAMILY PHOTO SERIES / “Emma and Leonard” / “Grandparents circa 1914” / “Sisters” /
Courtesy Wikimedia here Taken with Sony Cybershot – cropped to square. Viola is a genus of flowering plants in the violet family Violaceae, with around 400–500 species distributed around the world. Most species are found in the temperate Northern Hemisphere, however viola species (commonly called violets, pansies or heartsease) are also found in widely divergent areas such as Hawaii, Australasia, and the Andes in South America. Most Viola species are tiny perennial plants, some are annual plants, and a few are small shrubs. A number of species are grown for their ornamental flowers in borders and rock gardens; the garden pansy in particular is an extensively used spring and autumn/winter bedding and pot plant. Viola and violetta are terms used by gardeners and generally in horticulture for neat, small-flowered hybrid plants intermediate in size between pansies and violets. Canon Powershot A400, edited in picnik Detail from one of the collage series of grandma’s things. This book was in my grandmother’s collection of toys and books used by my uncle and my dad. It was one of the two that still had a cover on it. This piece symbolizes my grandmother’s faith and the legacy she left her family. She prayed for her grandchildren daily and said often, “I fell asleep while saying my prayers last night.” “Prayers for Little Children” was edited by Mary Allen Jones and illustrated by Lucia Patton. It is by published by Rand McNally & Co, Chicago. I was not able to find a publishing date.
