3 houses stand together in a row. The one furthest is my grandma’s. She lives alone, beside my granduncles who live with family. The last house belongs to another grandaunt who lives with her domestic helper. Today, we helped my grandma to paint to gate of her home. As she is getting on in age and since it was the school holidays, we decided to go spend some time with her. The only problem was that it is the RAINing season now! So we’d paint… it’d rain.. we’d paint.. it’d drizzle.. we’d paint.. it’d downpour… but the beauty of it is that the paint dried really fast and is waterproof, so it didn’t matter much to us. Besides, my brother brought the camera and we had a great time shooting the many beautiful flowers and plants in her garden – I have added some of these pictures here. For easy reference, they are called ‘Grandma’s _‘ Many of these pictures have a story behind them, so I hope you will enjoy looking through them! Since there are 12 days of Christmas =P, and it’s still new into 2008, I’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! =)

Grandma was quiet the lady in her 90’s I wrote a book about her life coming to the US from Russia and then small inserts about our week end outings she loved so much. Here is one about those darn dentures. Read and enjoy. Those dentures As you know we go out every other Saturday so there are lots of tales to share which come from these outings as well as stories of what has transpired during our trips. This Saturday we have again made the trip to Shoney’s of course this isn’t her favorite Shoney’s due to not having the old timers that the one by the uniform shop has. All the same Gramma enjoys every minute of her dining out. / We have just finished and the conversation of the day was the frustration she is having with her teeth, well maybe lack of teeth at the moment. Gramma has full dentures on the top however has only a partial on the bottom as she has managed to keep some of her bottom teeth. Now at her age this is most unusual. Unfortunately the last few teeth she has holding in her partial are giving her a hard time. So we are now at the stage in her life where she will have to have a lower denture plate. This isn’t something she takes lightly too in any way shape or form. / As we are leaving the parking lot she was saying how she will be glad to be able to eat what she wants be it hard or soft food. She still had the partial in until the dentures could be fitted. The partial didn’t seem to want to stay exactly where it should be and although there was no way she could choke on it or have it slip down her throat it was most uncomfortable. She was expressing this frustration and as I glanced over to her I looked her in the eyes and said in an ironical manner, “Gramma are ya drooling? Poor thing do I need to wipe your chin?” She gave me the most hilarious look and said “honey do you have a tissue for your old Grandmaw to wipe her chin?” Honestly she wasn’t drooling but just the thought of being old and having drool come from her mouth wasn’t something she ever wanted to have to deal with. / Since this trip out she has been fitted and should be getting her new dentures soon. By the time we make our next Saturday dinning trip after visiting the salon she will be able to munch on all the food she wants and any desert choice she so chooses! by Leta Davenport

When I stopped in this last Saturday to see grandma—I brought with me my little children. I was not sure how they would react to seeing grandma in her last days, but I knew that they needed to remember grandma and identify with the reality that when our work is done here on this earth we must move on to a higher realm. / Both my little ones asked questions and in their little minds made sense of the situation. They asked question after question just to be sure. They since have learned that grandma passed they have formed their ideas as to why and how. Of the comments that my little darlings have made to me, my son has by far explained the situation to me with all but clarity. I knew that he was a special child and understood more then anyone may have thought about life when he was at the young age of 3—he told me that when he was in heaven, he chose me to be his mother long before any of us where here on this earth— / When it came to the passing of grandma, and I told him that grandma was in heaven, he responded with assurance that “Grandma was already in heaven when he seen her sleeping” and when I asked him to explain this to me, he simply stated “she was tricking us”. / Of this comment I began to make sense myself: / As we hang on to the tangible things in this life—people—items—or situations, each of us has our own reasons as to why letting go of a loved one is difficult. / Our children are the closest things we have to GOD in a tangible sense—while our elders are the closest things we can relate to heaven. What we forget or lose sight of is the peace that heaven has to offer us and we become caught up in the selfishness of this world. / While my son identified with grandma passing as a simple transition where she was already in heaven while she was asleep that fateful Saturday—I identified with the fact that he had to be right and was letting me know that GOD really does have a plan— Grandma in my sons heart was already in heaven—she was preparing us for the inevitable—whether we understand it or not—from the innocence of our children comes a pure understanding that is unscathed and without the life long exposures of the good and the bad that we find all around us in this world. / On this note, I would like to say that I know grandma is safe within the gates of heaven—GOD has blessed her with many experiences that no one else in this world could take back to him except her.

Woo hoo! My work “Cup of Tea @ Grandma’s” got picked as the new group avatar for the Tea & Chairs group! I am completely chuffed about this as there was some great work to choose from, and somehow or other my piece got picked! Just wanted to say thanks to my new redbubble friends who have been supporting me so well. I feel very welcome in this little community. It’s so nice to get that little bit of recognition, just makes my day when people comment on my work or favourite it. No sales yet, but I’ll keep trying :). Now that really would give me a buzz. Anyway thanks to all of you who have taken the time to stop by and look at my work, I really do appreciate it! Lyn

I got my hair cut the other day and when my 3 year old grandson noticed it, he gasped and said, “Grandma! Your hair is broken!” lol I have laughed about this each time that I think of it. Then today, I thought that maybe someone else might be blessed by the antics of a 3 year old. Therefore I am posting it in my journal. Have a great day!

I’ve written a few poems directly referencing my Grandma in recent months – or obliquely tied into something I was feeling since she had a massive stroke the Thursday after Easter. But her unsettling deterioration has reached its conclusion and on Friday she died. Like most people find with grief, it is strange and confronting each time someone we love dies, but overall I am just so relieved. I’m writing the eulogy for my family so I’ll probably drop off RB for a bit while attending to things and helping my Mum as much as possible, so wanted to post a journal entry – not for condolences, commiserations, etc – just to explain why I won’t be commenting as much as usual. These are the poems I’ve written pre-death and once things settle a little I’d anticipate others to follow (probably about either or both Grandma and my Dad, who died nearly 12 years ago): Venting Venom Atrophy Warnambool, 31 October 1997 Love and laughter sweet peoples / xoxo Deb xoxo

In Warrnambool’s Gateway Church of Christ I was to some extent railing against the idea of god and religion, but what follows is the basic eulogy I prepared for my beloved Grandma (5 May 1914 – 10 July 2009) I have some facts and memories I’d like to share about my Grandma, Ivy May Houston. Regarding the three facts, two of which I only learnt of last Saturday, please view any mistakes as my own! I’d recommend asking for more detail from my Mum, Lynette, or my Aunt, Heather Harvey, in the morning tea. Fact 1) Grandma was a renowned seamstress in her youth as a Chappell. In a national competition, she was ranked 3rd in Victoria and 7th in Australia for her sewing skills. IN her typical fashion, this was not something she boasted about or spoke of – just one small part of her life’s journey. Grandma and her beloved sister Daisy had a business together at one point, in addition to duties on the Birregurra farm. It culminated in a wonderful story of Grandma making a wedding dress for her cousin, Jessie Johnson, then re-used by Daisy when she married Gordon, and lastly used by herself when she married Errett Campbell Houston. But I’m getting ahead of myself…so now I’d like to provide some detail around the courtship of my Grandma and Pa. Fact 2) In these modern times of internet dating, it is perhaps hard to believe that there are interesting parallels to the first part of the 20th Century. I was delighted to learn of how Grandma and Pa became acquainted. Around 1940 (possibly 1939) an ad was placed in The Weekly Times requesting penfriends. Criteria specifically covered: – interest in church and being a non-drinker. This led to Pa first writing to his future bride from either Port Campbell or Heytesbury on a date important to them both: 25 December. I’ve never read the letters, but I’d love to, and it’s wonderful to think of how many wonderful years of marriage they shared through a simple request for correspondence from someone of shared values and belief. Fact 3) The last item I’d like to share ties back to the anniversary date of Grandma and Pa. It’s the first memory I have of Grandma using historical dates as a learning technique. In May, a great month for birthdays in my family, Grandma and Pa were born on the 5th and 17th, Barb and Lynd on the 14th and 30th, Mother’s day the second Sunday, and they celebrated their wedding day on the addition of their birthdays: 5+17=22. Grandma and Pa weer not frivolous in buying gifts for one another, but I always remember them thanking God for their marriage when saying grace – a memory I cherish. Obviously a life of 95 years is much more than a collection of facts though. It is an evocative combination of memories, associations and lessons learnt (IMHO!). I’d encourage everyone here so inclined to share an interesting story in Grandma’s memorial book – it would be a tremendous source of joy to her family and friends to read of any facts previously unknown. And as mentioned previously, I’ve enjoyed learning so much from my Grandma between the 1970s and now that I would feel privileged to learn yet more of how she impacted the lives of others. I’d like to offer three of the most important life learnings I’ve had from Grandma. Obviously quite hard to pick just three as she’s been a significant influence on all of her family, but here goes: 1) Church/God, 2) Work Ethic and 3) Love of Children 1) Anyone who knew her – whether as a passing acquaintance or as a loved family member or friend – can attest to her steadfast love of her Lord Jesus Christ, God and Church. I always found her example of faithfulness to be truly admirable. It never had the hypocritical ring of religion for the sake of it, but something pure and true with which she and Pa wrapped themselves. They each shared a love for God that shone in their faces and I’ll always treasure my memories of travelling to the Port Fairy Church of Christ with them and singing songs like Jesus wants me for a sunbeam 2) I’ve always been impressed by Grandma’s work ethic too. Dairy farmers able to milk cows twice per day, have three solid meals, and at one stage go to church for a morning, afternoon and evening service. Always with exactly the right spirit in evidence: doing it out of love, rather than a misplaced sense of obligation or compliance with a religious belief that is more about looking good than being good. I think there are many examples I could provide of work ethic, but one tied to time management which enabled her to go to church and continually strengthen her relationship with God seems the most apt. 3) The third and final feature of Grandma I wish to discuss is her love of children. Mum mentioned it in her tribute in The Warrnambool Standard but I remember countless toys she crafted for sick children in the Royal Children’s Hospital, plus toys for her own children, grand-children and great-grandchildren. she was a humble woman who only saw her gifts/talents with knitting and sewing as something she could use to help others. Thank you all for listening to my memories and reminiscing about a lovely, strong, wonderful Christian woman I feel blessed to have had in my life as Grandma. My concluding note is reference to the last really wonderful day my family shared with her: Easter Monday 2009. A wonderful lunch in Ballarat where we laughed, talked of our shared past and created new memories with four generations present. It’s a gift I’ll always treasure.

It took a while to okay all the editing and elements of this story, including the pictures. But now it’s available on https://www.createspace.com/3394544 / and amazon.com too. It’s a strange tale, I derrived it from a painting of Little Red Riding hood eating a wolf. And it just grew into this strange little twisted tale about how she ate the wolf, with other characters like Rumplestiltonskin coming into the story for a ride. Hope you all have a laugh reading it.

To celebrate the coming of Christmas I thought I’d get festive and slash the prices on my Calendars. I have 4 brand new 2010 Calendars that may appeal to you or for a gift…I have slashed the prices by $15 meaning I only make $1 per calendar but that is OK, I’d rather see them go out the door for super Christmas presents. For every dollar I make I will match it and donate it to my local Kid’s Playgroup, I don’t expect to give them much but every dollar helps someone!! Please have a look, for $21 (instead of the regular $25 – a saving of $4 per calendar!) you can have a lovely, quality present that lasts for a whole 12 months, I reckon calendars are a top gift, anyone can buy me one anytime!! My Calendar Selection for 2010 Thanks everyone, / Vanessa :O)
