It’s really an amazing story of flowering creative courage. And three (3.!) while writing the poem the image of the painting “A Wave” just slid deeply into me deep and quiet as it just guided the poem’s writing the mysterious whole way. Featured in “AMERICA’s National Parks and WILDLIFE Habitat” – June 2009. A very narrow slot canyon appropriately named Spooky Gulch twists and turns for several hundred meters through a dry desert landscape. Its walls tower many meters overhead while the opening in front of you seems to get smaller and smaller. Those hikers that are both brave and thin enough to fit through will find that they are able to make it to the opposite side. Standing alone late evening as a witness to the Testimony of Time this sheer cliff face, battered, scared stood a casuality to the erosion of time and its environment around it. If we could see over the decades what it had witnessed it certainly would be breathtaking to say the least. The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided gorge carved by the Colorado River in the United States in the state of Arizona. It is largely contained within the Grand Canyon National Park — one of the first national parks in the United States. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of preservation of the Grand Canyon area, and visited it on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery. A map of the Grand Canyon and surrounding areas, circa 1908.Longstanding scientific consensus has been that the canyon was created by the Colorado River over a six million year period. The canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, ranges in width from 4 to 18 miles (6.4 to 29 km) and attains a depth of over a mile (1.83 km) (6000 feet). Nearly two billion years of the Earth’s geological history have been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their channels through layer after layer of rock while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted. The “canyon began in the west, followed by another that formed in the east. Eventually, the two broke through and met as a single majestic rent in the earth some six million years ago. The merger apparently occurred where the river today bends to the west, in the area known as the Kaibab Arch. Photo taken at the Grand Teton National Park Wyoming An ethereal mountain landscape where jagged peaks tower more than a mile above the Jackson Hole valley, Grand Teton National Park is located in northwestern Wyoming just south of Yellowstone National Park and just north of the town of Jackson. Visitors can reach the park through U.S. 191. The park’s mountain range is very popular among climbers, hikers and photographers. The Tetons are a prime example of fault-block mountain formation. When the earth’s crust cracked along a fault millions of years ago, the Tetons rose into the sky. The exposed crystalline rocks give these mountains their dramatic appearance in any season. A male yellow headed blackbird near Oxbow Bend, Grand Teton National Park, USA. Nesting amongst reeds in marshes, the yellow headed blackbird feeds on insects and seeds. Migratory in nature, yellow headed blackbirds breed through the central United States into northern Canada. Winter grounds extend from the southwestern United States well into central Mexico. Common among songbirds, the male is the one blessed with spectacular plumage while females sport drab black and brown feathering. While the yellow headed blackbird is a flagrantly beautiful bird, it’s normal call is entirely non-melodic, raucous and harsh.
