This natural arch is often considered to be Malta’s most beautiful natural landmarks. It really does deserve this title! / Azure Window, Gozo, Malta
This was one of the most stunnng and peacefull places in the world. The ancient home of the nymph Calypso who supposedly lured Odyesseus to stay with her here. / Ramla Bay, Gozo, Malta
Summer shopping from the open air market in Victoria, Gozo, is best done in the early hours of the day. The early hours offer shade, a fresher produce, and, best of all, fewer people around to bump into you. This Lady looks like she’s already done with her shopping for the day and appears to be heading home wheeling her shopping basket behind her.
On Sunday, August 10th, 2008, is the Feast of San Lorenzo (St. Lawrence). It also marks the 1750th Anniversary from the Saints Martrydom. The Feast is celebrated in the old City of Vittoriosa, in Malta and in the Village of San Lawrenz in the sister Island of Gozo. The Church in the picture, dedicated to Saint Lawrence, is the one of Vittoriosa. Vittoriosa is one of the oldest parishes in Malta. The original Church served as the Conventual Church of the Order of St John before the building of Valletta, and St. John’s Cathedral. The present Church was built between 1681 and 1697 and was designed by Malta’s most prominent Baroque Architect, Lorenzo Gafa. It is a fine example of Roman Baroque.
The Cittadella, also known as the ‘Gran Castello’ is a small fortified town situated on a promontory sited over the City of Victoria in Gozo, Malta’s sister Island. Before the arrival of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem it was also known as ‘Gaulcouis Civitas’, possibly after the Roman Settlement. Archaeological finds have indicated that this naturally defended hilltop had hosted small settlements as early as the Bronze Age. / Because of its central location, this small settlement grew to become the administrative center of the Island during Phoenician and Roman times. / The Medieval Township at the Cittadella is documented to have thrived up to the 16th Century. / When the Knights came to Malta, they continued to use the Cittadella as a place for shelter for the population in times of trouble. In 1551, the Island was attacked by Moslem Arabs and the entire population was carried away into slavery. / Military developments in the 16th Century abandoned the Township and transformed it into a purely military outpost. / The Architectural heritage is made up of almost intirely military structures, however some important architectural monuments were constructed in the Baroque style. A fine example is the Cathedral which was constructed in the 17th Century and has housed the Bishop’s seat since 1864.
The picture is of a small island called Fungus Rock. It lies just off the coast near Dwejra on the western side of the island of Gozo, part of the Maltese archipelago. A rare plant grows there, prized for its medicinal qualities – so much so that the Knights of St. John forbade anyone to collect it on penalty of death and mounted a guard to keep trespassers away. Probably for this reason the Maltese call this rock “The General’s Rock”. The title means northwest in Maltese and that’s where this November storm was coming from, when this picture was taken near sunset. Tourists used to visiting in Summer might be interested in a somewhat different view of the place! Pentax K 10D.
I visited Gozo Yesterday (Saturday 7th December 2008). On my way uphill to enter the ‘Citadella, I saw a path to my right, which I never noticed before. This led me to a space just under the Bastions where I saw a small half demolished shack. As curious as a cat, I ventured inside only to discover this small niche in one of the walls inside which I found these empty bottles. I thought to myself that someone must have had quite a Party last Summer in this place!

As promised to Gilberte, this is a collage of some of the beauty spots you see on your way down the Lunzjata Valley in Kercem, Gozo. Starting from top left, you can see the Arched entrance to the Valley and the statue of St Joseph at the entrance. Next you can see the Chappel of the Annunciation and the stone bench behind the Chappel offering a peaceful rest in the shade. Below left is the spring which supplies the valley with water. Next is a picture of a ‘Hannewija’Bear’s Breeches (Acanthus mollis) , one of our beautiful wild plants frequently found in valleys. Next is a set of steps cleverly built into a rubble wall and next to it a picture of steps dug out in the solid rock a few hundred years ago, leading into and out of the valley, on the opposite side of the Chappel. Underneath is an example of water channels dug out in stone-blocks used to carry water to the fields since ancient times, when pipes were unheard of. Far right is an example of our ‘Farfett tal-Kabocci-Large White Butterfly-Pieris brassicae, a once very common butterfly , but steadily on the decrease because of the use of pesticides. Bottom left is an entrance to a small cave dug out right next to a larger natural one shown in the next picture. Last picture, bottom right ,shows the real start of the Valley. It is all privately owned land. A beautiful converted Farmhouse and the base of a wind-operated water pump can also be seen.

Steps leading up the cliff overlooking the little bay of Xlendi in Gozo.
Ancient door of a farmhouse in Gozo , the beautiful green sister island of Malta, with small windiws boarded and closed – I wondered if someone still lived there as there was a stone trough on the pavement filled with flowers, so the place wasn’t totally unloved. Perhaos the door led to a store room?
The Citadel is in the centre of Gozo, Malta’s sister island. The small fortified town is situated on a promontory sited over the town of Victoria. This vantage point was obviously chosen because it was a naturally fortified hill which dominated the surrounding countryside. The Citadel is documented to have thrived up to the 16th Century, and included a densely packed urban settlement. When the Knights of St. John came to Malta, they continued to use the citadel as a place of shelter for the population in times of trouble. Military developments in the 16th Century resulted in its transformation into a purely military outpost. In fact the architectural heritage of the Citadel, as it stands today, is made up almost entirely of military structures.
