Old Maltese Balcony and window
A sight which these days is becoming increasingly rare in the Maltese islands – a goatherd leading his charges back home at the end of the day. Up to about 40 years ago this was a very common sight. Goats were the main source of milk – in fact the goat used to be milked at your door, which facilitated the spread of undulant fever, or brucellosis. Fortunately, these days this disease has been almost wiped out by pasteurisation.
This magnificent November sunset over the village of Qala in Gozo, Maltese islands had to be seen to be believed. Those who might think this is overdone are invited to come and see for themselves! HDR. Pentax K 10D.
The lane leading up to a restored Gozitan farmhouse. The rubble wall on the left has been very well rebuilt and the amazing shrub spilling over it adds a glorious splash of yellow to the scene.
The picture is of a small island called Fungus Rock. It lies just off the coast near Dwejra on the western side of the island of Gozo, part of the Maltese archipelago. A rare plant grows there, prized for its medicinal qualities – so much so that the Knights of St. John forbade anyone to collect it on penalty of death and mounted a guard to keep trespassers away. Probably for this reason the Maltese call this rock “The General’s Rock”. The title means northwest in Maltese and that’s where this November storm was coming from, when this picture was taken near sunset. Tourists used to visiting in Summer might be interested in a somewhat different view of the place! Pentax K 10D.
Just after dawn on a late November morning. Taken from the ramparts of the Citadel at the capital, Victoria.
Gozo is cat-lovers’ paradise. You couldn’t get a more Gozitan (Maltese) cat than this one – rubble wall, prickly pear, limestone building blocks and cat….. Pentax K 10D.
Another cat half asleep in a nook in the bastion wall just outside the entrance to the Citadel, Gozo (Maltese archipelago).

The early Sunday morning Mass is about to start and parishioners are hurrying to the church… Taken not long after dawn in one of the quiet rural villages on the tiny island of Gozo (Maltese archipelago). Pentax K 10D
A typical village in Gozo (Maltese archipelago). Large church around which cluster the squat, flat-roofed, limestone-built houses; a patchwork of tiny fields on the village boundary; rubble walls, prickly pear and brown fertile earth everywhere. / The name is pronounced “show-key-ya”. Pentax K 10D.

The base of the village cross in Għarb (pron. arrb), Gozo. Pentax K 10D.
This valley, which as far as I can gather is called Wied is-Simar (Simar valley), is located near Qala, Gozo, Maltese archipelago. The fertile soil, lush crops, tiny fields, wind pump and reservoir, cane wind breaks and terraced fields are all typical scenes of valley agriculture in Gozo. Pentax K10D.
(pron. imjar ish sheeny). This tiny bay on the southern coast of the island of Gozo, Maltese archipelago, is now a popular spot for bathing and diving, and is used by fishermen too. In the middle ages it is reputed to have been used by the Knights of St. John to harbour their galleys. The tower was built in 1661 during the grandmastership of De Redin to guard this (then) very isolated spot. The land in the far background is the island of Malta, while that closer to the camera is the island of Comino. The two white Gozo Channel ferries are busy making their way to and from the two main islands… Pentax K10D.
The interior of the tiny chapel of Il-Madonna tal-Blat (the Madonna of the rocks), which overlooks the bay of Hondoq ir-Rummien on Gozo, Maltese archipelago. This was taken at Christmas time, with the beautiful decorations still in place.
The statue of St. George at the corner of the street of the same name in Victoria, the capital of Gozo, Maltese archipelago. Pentax K10D, 1/40 sec, f 4.5, 38 mm lens, ISO 100.
An old farmhouse in Qala, Gozo, Maltese archipelago. If not yet demolished, then it soon will be (unfortunately)! Pentax K10D.
... in Victoria, the capital of the island of Gozo, Maltese archipelago. This citadel lies in the middle of the capital and was where the island’s population hurried when Barbary corsairs appeared on the horizon. In the year 1551 it did not do much good as practically the whole of the population was carried off into slavery in North Africa and the island remained almost unpopulated for the next 200 years. This picture was taken from the vertiginous ramparts and shows the small fields inside the Citadel, presumably there to supply at least some of the food required to withstand a siege. The rubble walls in this picture are in good shape, but elsewhere in this gem of a place they are not. Maybe one day they will be restored and the weeds removed… / Pentax K10D. 1/60 sec, f 10, ISO 320, 68 mm lens.
