  • One word that describes the architecture of Whitehall is “venerable”. And from an artist’s viewpoint, the light and shading effects on these ‘corridors of power’ makes an interesting subject for a sketch. During a recent holiday to England, I visited the central area of London. / Great Scotland Yard Street is a few steps away from Trafalgar Square. I liked the pattern of sunlight and shadows in the narrow thoroughfare and this inspired me to create this drawing using pen and ink, plus coloured pencil for shading.

  • The Colonial Building was the seat of the Newfoundland government and the House of Assembly from January 28, 1850 to July 28, 1959 and in 1974 declared a Provincial Historic Site. It was also the site of a number of political riots and disturbances. One of those was the public protest on April 5, 1932 for maladministration and corruption in government when all the windows were broken, doors smashed and furniture destroyed, which cost $10,000 to repair. The Prime Minister, Sir Richard Squires, barely escaped the building at that time. / / ..................................... / Click here to add me to your watch list. / .....................................

  • Rotunda, Parliament Buildings, Ottawa Canada This is the grand entrance to the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. / The Centre, East and West blocks of the Parliament Buildings were built between 1859 and 1866 (excluding the Peace Tower and Library). / On February 3, 1916, near 9 p.m., a small fire started in the Parliamentary Reading Room in the Centre Block. Fed by stacks of newspapers and varnished woodwork, it was soon a raging blaze that claimed seven lives and reduced all but the north-west wing and the Library to a charred shell. Had an employee not closed the Library’s iron doors in time, thousands of irreplaceable books would also have been lost. / So strong was Canada’s commitment to maintaining a permanent home for Parliament that it began rebuilding the Centre Block while still embroiled in the First World War. The new structure, which preserved the Gothic Revival style of the original, was designed by John Pearson and Jean Omer Marchand and completed by 1922. • The United States Government has pumped hundreds of billions of dollars into the financial system and bailed out banks whose poor decision making should have caused them to go out of business. Instead of being forced to learn their lesson, these poor-performing banks are being rewarded for their financial mismanagement, and the ultimate cost of this bailout will fall on the American taxpayers. .
