  • This bright blue Eastern Pondhawk dragonfly is a male; its mate is apple green in color. Both are beautiful and graceful and very helpful to humans as they eat enormous numbers of mosquitoes daily. In fact, they are commonly referred to as mosquito hawks because they’re predators on the prowl for the offensive pests!

  • I’ve been having to get very close to the butterflies with my macro lens, but I decided to stalk them this time with my 400mm lens. I could keep a safe distance without scaring them away and came up with pretty good results on this Gulf Fritillary with its wings outspread. I’ll have to try this more often and see what happens.

  • A butterfly wings, digitally enhanced towards abstraction.

  • Digitally enhanced butterfly macro, bordering on abstraction in shades of Blue;

  • I think this is a Blue Morpho Butterfly which belongs to the family of Owls; I photographed it at the Insectarium on Canal Street in New Orleans, Louisiana, where butterflies flutter happily in a controlled environment, light on people’s shoulders (and on my toes), and bring smiles to every face. The only downside was the high heat and humidity. It kept the butterflies happy, but my eyeglasses and camera lenses kept fogging up! Still, it was worth the joy of the experience.

  • Mayfly – (Hexagenia limbata) / / A member of the insect Family Ephemeridae, this is the largest of all North American mayflies. It is commonly found on slow moving rivers and stillwaters across North America. Taken in Tryon, North Carolina. (He) stretched out his hand desperately as if to snatch only a wisp of air, to save a fragment of the spot that she had made lovely for him. But it was all going by too fast…and he knew that he had lost that part of it, the freshest and the best, forever.* / -F. Scott Fitzgerald (The Great Gatsby)

Dedicated to my gorgeous granddaughters Meg and Zoe who found this large bug-eaten leaf in my backyard.
