Taken in July 2008 with a Canon EOS 400D and 18-55mm lens / I sat on the floor right next to these beautiful babies. I had a loaf of bread to keep Mother and Father goose content and kept very very still.

Everyone love’s a baby and these dear Cygnets, ducklings and goslings have captured my heart since the day I photographed them. / They were all born in May – June 2008 and now fully grown they reside at Cwmbran boating lake, South Wales, United Kingdom. Lyn Evans

I went out after coyotes and wound up with goslings (baby geese). I ran into a family of 2 parents and 4 goslings. Canada Geese are monogamous and mate for life, and are very attentive parents. Wherever they went, one parent lead the way and the other parent brought up the rear, keeping a close eye on babies everywhere they went. They were very protective when they noticed a snapping turtle in the water. They’d chase away other geese and RWBBs that got too close, and would hiss and posture at any dog-walkers and dogs that got too close. I tried to keep my distance, mostly out of respect, but partly because I didn’t want to explain getting beat up by a bird. One of the goslings was particularly adventurous – I have the most photos of him. He’d be the one leading the way, out in front of the others, and the first one to wander away from the family. Mom and dad goose had their hands full keeping track of him. The arrival of the Canada Geese heralds spring here in the north. And these goslings in a huddle promise all the hope, renewal, and joy of new life in this season of rebirth. / Of course there is always a rebel in each family and this little guy seemed to have a lot to say as I approached his nesting siblings. / Nikon D40, Nikkor VR 55-200mm lens / May 16, 2009 Laval-Ouest, Quebec CANADA / See the whole family here A Family Looking To The Future Winner of the Canada Right Now, spring Canadiana challenge, June 2009 / Featured in Canadiana, June 2009 / Avatar for Canadiana, June 2009
The Gosling in the middle is the original, I decided to give him a couple of clones to race with.
Her cages, Mrs Macintosh / is careful to point out, are empty, / Birds revolt her – frighten / her wrinkled eyes with theirs / and mock her ways with harsh, high / female voices; or sing so sweetly / they could almost lure her back / to join the world. Unbearable. / No, she likes her symbolism: / cages free of birds, pure captivity / that’s innocent of pain. All day her hymns escape the house. (Rodney Hall)
