Taken at the Adelaide Zoo one week before Anguka (pictured) and her half-sister Safiri were shipped to Europe for a breeding programme.

This Western Lowland Gorilla and her baby son was shot from 100 feet away. All I wanted to do was get closer. It was starting to rain and she moved into the entrance to her shelter. I consider myself lucky to get this shot.

This is a young, female Western Lowland Gorilla. She was sitting by herself in the late afternoon when she suddenly turned to look towards me and I caught her fleeting glimpse on camera. Gorillas are amazing, beautiful animals, just as individual and thoughtful as ourselves. I want my Gorilla images to show both their similarities with human beings, and their unique differences. A lovely mountain gorilla in Rwanda, it was such a wonderful experience to meet him. He is one of 380 left in Rwanda and his name is Ntakibazo. He is part of the Umubano Group, meaning “neighborliness”. Umubano has 9 individuals: 1 Silverback; 1 Sub adult male; 3 Adult females and 4 Babies. Led by Charles, the dominant silverback, Umubano was formerly a part of the Amahoro group. As Charles matured into a silverback of the same rank as Ubumwe, he could not stand being given orders and decided to stage a fight and challenge Ubumwe. The fight went on for weeks and then months. Finally, Charles managed to snatch from Ubumwe a few females and formed his own group. Since then, he has commanded respect and recognition from Ubumwe.

Conservation Message / / Listed by USFWS (United States Fish and Wildlife Service) as endangered and protected by CITES. Gorillas are endangered due to increases in human population and the need to cultivate more land for farming and cattle. The natural habitat of the gorilla is shrinking. Poaching is also a problem for gorillas. /

Gorilla Oil Painting on canvas (40×40cm) When I first saw this gorilla, I was immediately struck by what I perceived to be sadness. He looks so deep in thought and I wondered what this beautiful creature was thinking… of family lost, freedom lost and what we humans do in our endless arrogance and greed to other animals on this planet. I hope that one day, we will realise that they are just as worthy of life and freedom as we would like to believe ourselves to be. I love painting eyes. However, what I like about this painting is not being able to see the gorilla’s eyes. His posture tells the story. This is a close-up view of the painting. Gorillas, the largest of the living primates, are ground-dwelling herbivores that inhabit the forests of Africa. The DNA of gorillas is 98%–99% identical to that of a human, and they are the next closest living relatives to humans after the two chimpanzee species. Gorilla’s are highly endangered, and have been subject to intense poaching for a long time. Threats to gorilla survival include habitat destruction and the bushmeat trade. In 2004 a population of several hundred gorillas in the Odzala National Park, Republic of Congo was essentially wiped out by the Ebola virus. A 2006 study published in Science concluded that more than 5,000 gorillas may have died in recent outbreaks of the Ebola virus in central Africa. The researchers indicated that in conjunction with commercial hunting of these apes creates “a recipe for rapid ecological extinction”.
