  • Bobby loves to eat his food twice!! One of his less than endearing habits, but the other gorillas don’t seem to mind. In fact Effy a 15 year old female is always asking him for a share and Zaire being the out going one likes to share with visitors to London Zoo. So she smears hers on the glass by some unsuspecting visitor and eats it from there. Sorry I know to much information. But peoples utter disgust always makes me laugh.

  • Daddy and baby gorilla playing at the Little Rock Zoo, Arkansas. Previous assessments have focused on habitat availability as the major predictor of gorilla abundance. Thus, the commonly cited figure of 95,000 western gorillas is based on an assumption that all intact habitat in Western Equatorial Africa contains gorillas at densities that were typical of Gabon in the early 1980s. However, habitat loss is not the major driver of ape decline in this region. Rather, recent surveys suggest that since the early 1980s, commercial hunting and outbreaks of the Ebola virus have virtually extirpated gorillas from a great deal of otherwise intact forest. Technical problems with the conversion of ape nest density to estimates of gorilla density preclude a rigorous estimate of range-wide gorilla abundance.

  • Tumani is a female Lowland gorilla and just over a year old. She is full of energy and loves to chase butterflys and bugs through the grass as she rolls down the hill! / Lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla) is different than the Mountain gorilla because they don’t have the long, shaggy fur like their mountain kin. Gorillas move around by knuckle-walking and males can grow to be 5’9" tall and weigh up to 410 pounds. They are colored lighter than the mountain gorillas and are more slender and agile. A silverback is an adult male gorilla, usually 12+ years old. The gorilla is classified as a foliovore and eats mostly grasses, shrubs and occasionally insects.
