This is a young, female Western Lowland Gorilla. She was sitting by herself in the late afternoon when she suddenly turned to look towards me and I caught her fleeting glimpse on camera. Gorillas are amazing, beautiful animals, just as individual and thoughtful as ourselves. I want my Gorilla images to show both their similarities with human beings, and their unique differences. A lovely mountain gorilla in Rwanda, it was such a wonderful experience to meet him. He is one of 380 left in Rwanda and his name is Ntakibazo. He is part of the Umubano Group, meaning “neighborliness”. Umubano has 9 individuals: 1 Silverback; 1 Sub adult male; 3 Adult females and 4 Babies. Led by Charles, the dominant silverback, Umubano was formerly a part of the Amahoro group. As Charles matured into a silverback of the same rank as Ubumwe, he could not stand being given orders and decided to stage a fight and challenge Ubumwe. The fight went on for weeks and then months. Finally, Charles managed to snatch from Ubumwe a few females and formed his own group. Since then, he has commanded respect and recognition from Ubumwe.

This Western Lowland Gorilla and her baby son was shot from 100 feet away. All I wanted to do was get closer. It was starting to rain and she moved into the entrance to her shelter. I consider myself lucky to get this shot.

Kouillou is a Western Lowland Gorilla. I took this photo of him at Howletts wildlife park. I sat and watched this guy for hours, when he finally sat still enough for me to get a shot of him . It was as if he was giving me his permission. He has such a wonderful character. I’m hoping to go back soon…..

Conservation Message / / Listed by USFWS (United States Fish and Wildlife Service) as endangered and protected by CITES. Gorillas are endangered due to increases in human population and the need to cultivate more land for farming and cattle. The natural habitat of the gorilla is shrinking. Poaching is also a problem for gorillas. /

Western lowland gorillas are endangered, but they remain far more common than their relatives, the mountain gorillas. They live in heavy rain forests, and it is difficult for scientists to accurately estimate how many survive in Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. / Female gorillas give birth to one infant after a pregnancy of nearly nine months. Unlike their powerful parents, newborns are tiny—weighing four pounds (two kilograms)—and able only to cling to their mothers’ fur.
