  • The magical Fern Pool in Karijini National Park, where the serpent ancestors of the Aboriginal people were said to create the landscape when the earth was still soft as they weaved their way through the land. The serpents are said to still inhabit the waterhole. This was one of my favourite spots in Karijini. After a long hot hike through the gorge floor, feeling a bit ‘gorged out’, and then coming out of the dark trees into this serene pool was like I’d arrived at paradise. Nikon D90, AS-F DX Nikkor 18-55mm

  • This photo was taken out of the bus windscreen as we descended into Stalheim Gorge in Norway. There were at least 13 tight bends, close together, with a bus in each one as we dropped into the valley. Passing the buses was easy – it was the other drivers that didn’t know the routine that caused difficulties.

  • This photo was taken from a bus as we descended the very tight and narrow “squiggles” into Stalheim Gorge, Norway.

  • Kanaka Creek canyon near Maple Ridge, BC, Cliff Park. I used to explore this area when I was a kid many years ago. A large block of sandstone has fallen into the canyon from the cliffs. The whole area is lush with vegetation, ferns, moss, vine maples, cedars, hemlocks. Two creeks merge at the park and carve out giants cauldrons in the sandstone and falls.

  • The creek has gently carved it’s course through the canyon

  • New River Groge National River at Hawks Nest State Park, located in Ansted, West Virginia

  • Rays of the sun peek through the clouds on a late summer morning near Mosier, Oregon. Photo taken August, 2008.

  • This one-lane bridge spanning the Clark Fork River at Alberton, Montana, was built in 1918 at a cost of $100,000. The construction costs of the bridge were supposed to be born by Mineral County, but the county had to seek federal funds from the Forest Service. In constructing the bridge, the central pier was anchored on a rocky outcrop in the River. This bridge was part of the Yellowstone Trail that ran from Lookout Pass on the Montana/Idaho state line (where I-90 now crosses the mountains) to the Montana/South Dakota state line in the southeastern corner of the state. Taken 1/3/10 at Alberton, Montana, using a Nikon D80 fitted with a Nikkor 16-85 mm wide angle/tele/zoom lens set at 62 mm. The image is a true HDR composite using the following settings: ISO 125 / Aperture f /13.0 / Shutter speeds: 1/30, 1/60, 1/125 second. / Hand held / All processing done in Photoshop CS4.
