Lady gondolier…where else but Las Vegas. I thought she looked the part beautifully. /

A gondolier in Venice.
Gondolier, Venice by Claire Penn
This is one of 2 pictures I am loading of the Grand Canal, I have a few more, but these where the 2 I been debating over for a while. I like them both for different reasons and could not decide which I preferred. This one I like for the subtle reflection and the light on the homes along the bank, and of course the Lone Gondolier. It was a day full of many seasons, the few days we were there at about 3.30pm the clouds got very dark and it poured like we were in the tropics. Only to clear up as fast as it came around 4pm, and then we could all venture out again. Venice is a magical place.

This was shot in Burano island, at dusk. / The colours of the sky and the fishermen houses were absolutely stunning! Find more at my Yannis Larios Photography website, where I keep my Greece photos and World photos that I have shot This comes from my Venice photo gallery
San Marco gondolas with San Giorgio Maggiore background: / A woke up early to capture the first rays at this typical Venice shot. Not being satisfied, I kept looking for something that would give it life. Observing the pigeons I found what I hoped for: I only had to wait for the next ship or boat! What a unique town this is, wonderful atmosphere and sights all round. The poles were actually blue, so inspired me to convert the image. The water looks rather inviting in this case, but in a city like this swimming is not an option.
Along the canals of Zu Jia Jiao, China, this river gondolier takes a break to have a cigarette, and to check his nails.

Well here is my quick sketch to celebrate Drawing Day 09. Drawn of a photograph I took near the Rialto Bridge. Not all the detail, I skipped a few buildings. Drawn with Pastel Pencils on Black. / / Link to Group: / Link to Drawing Day Website: / My original photograph: / :
A gorgeous Gondolier !! Featured by I Love Italy – 1st Aug 2009
Well I won a challenge over in Just Watercolours to paint this image I submitted. And thought I should have a go myself. Link to Challenge: As I was originally a painter,(too many year ago to note)... when I took a photograph it was often for the painting potential. I just have not had time to paint much. Now I am pushing myself to paint again, (but mostly in watercolours, not oil – a challenge in itself). Anyway, I just took a section of the buildings and moved the Lone Gondolier over a bit, to get a different look (ok… and to reduce the time needed for all those wonderful buildings – I thought that was a bit too much for me to tackle) ‘Eraldo di Paolo 300gsm Medium tooth paper. Variety of watercolour brands’ : And here is a version I did for Drawing Day 09 / : Plus I have now put together a Calendar of a few of my favourite works / :

Thank you my dear friend for your generous help. On March 6th 2009 I visited Venice for a day-trip with friends. While walking around, shopping souvenirs and so on, we passed this small canal bridge, and I noticed this guy who was in this exact position pictured here. He was cool when I turned back to ask him, pointing at my camera ’’ can I ? ’’, just nodding his head, then resuming his original position as shown, gazing into some distant place….This was my spontaneous meeting with a Venetian Gondolier, and resulted in this shot, which I would not consider a posed shot, as this is this fellow’s natural demeanor, this is him in his natural state. Some of my other shots have been posed, but this is not one of them. It was pure life. And it was my first visit to Venice.
