I got sick of beakfaces and lizards momentarily and decided to paint some fishies – literally, goldfish…I’ve applied patches of gold leaf to their little heads. Despite being distracted by Eurovision I managed to finish it this weekend!! This one will probably be at Brunswick St Gallery in their small works show, June 6th. About 20×20cm, watercolour, chalk pastel etc on canvas. These enlargements are bigger than life size:
shooting goldfish in an aquarium, and in this tank they had put some clay statues. at first i was really annoyed as i wanted to shoot fish, not little algae laden clay statues! but then came this one! This painting was rendered on cold press paper, at last 300 lb. I dont know for sure as it was a gift along with many other papers. I usually work on hot press watercolor or Clayboard, both smooth surfaces. This paper is very rough and absorbed water and pigment almost on contact, before it could plume. There was texture and a different absorbtion time to contend with. My usual technique, which requires large amounts of water and controlled pluming, wasn’t possible on this ground, as it was so thirsty! It was a pleasure working with the imagery and attempting to convey the shimmer and movement of koi. Text and image copyright Helena Nelson – Reed. Do not use without written permission.

II’ve always had a fascination with koi. Their longevity, beauty… everything. And since I don’t have a koi pond… I created this piece to reflect how lovely I think they are.
