  • Lavender Finch
    by Renee Dawson

    US$4.83–US$110.20

Featured in – The Birds, February 7, 2009 I can’t help but dream of summer, and much warmer temperatures, when I look at this image. This piece consists of 6 layers (the background, 5 different layers of pretty lavender blooms, and an adorable little american goldfinch). After merging all of the layers in PhotoShop I digitally painted the entire piece in Corel Painter X. My intent with the goldfinch was to make her look like a baby, that had just left the nest, and was still looking for Mom to bring her some food. / / Fine Art Gallery / Bird Gallery / ADD RENEE TO YOUR WATCHLIST

  • American Goldfinch
    by Vickie Emms

    US$4.32–US$98.80

Featured in Backyard – Closeups – May 24, 2009 This handsome little finch, the state bird of New Jersey, Iowa, and Washington, is welcome and common at feeders, where it takes primarily sunflower and nyjer. Goldfinches often flock with Pine Siskins and Common Redpolls. Spring males are brilliant yellow and shiny black with a bit of white. Females and all winter birds are more dull but identifiable by their conical bill; pointed, notched tail; wingbars; and lack of streaking. During molts they look bizarrely patchy. / Size & Shape: A small finch with a short, conical bill and a small, head, long wings, and short, notched tail. / Color Pattern: Adult males in spring and early summer are bright yellow with black forehead, black wings with white markings, and white patches both above and beneath the tail. Adult females are duller yellow beneath, olive above. Winter birds are drab, unstreaked brown, with blackish wings and two pale wingbars. / Behavior: These are active and acrobatic little finches that cling to weeds and seed socks, and sometimes mill about in large numbers at feeders or on the ground beneath them. Goldfinches fly with a bouncy, undulating pattern and often call in flight, drawing attention to themselves. / Habitat: The goldfinch’s main natural habitats are weedy fields and floodplains, where plants such as thistles and asters are common. They’re also found in cultivated areas, roadsides, orchards, and backyards. American Goldfinches can be found at feeders any time of year, but most abundantly during winter. • Goldfinch Encounter
    by Bonnie T. Barry

    US$4.32–US$98.80

As I working in the house this morning, I heard a loud bang on the French doors leading to the patio. Just as I figured, one of the little goldfinches feeding on the patio had a head-on collision with the glass doors and was laying on the ground, stunned and shaken. I grabbed my camera with the macro lens and went out to see what I could do. The poor little mite let me pet him and talk soothingly to him and didn’t even budge; then he allowed me to snap several shots of him up close. When I put my finger under his tiny talons, he perched onboard quite willingly and we both enjoyed a brief visit. Then he hopped onto the brick wall of the house where he remained a bit longer as I talked to him and assured him he’d be okay. He looked at me so trustingly and then allowed a few more pictures. Finally, when I approached him in invitation to climb aboard my finger one last time, he did so, lingered a second or so, and then took to the skies. It was a glorious moment for me, an early Christmas present from the good Lord, or at least that’s the way I see it. Just thought I’d share my sweet encounter with the goldfinch and let you see his beauty up close!

Featured in the group ImageWriting in July 2009 The Lesser Goldfinch or Dark-backed Goldfinch (Carduelis psaltria) is a very small songbird of the Americas. This one is a subspecies of the Dark-backed Goldfinch known as Carduelis psaltria colombianus and is found in Colombia and Ecuador. Two forms of males: black-backed, which occur in southern part of range, and green-backed in the western part; both have black crown, white markings on black wing and tail, with bright yellow underparts. The male, which this one is, has more distinct markings as noted by the black back and crown whereas the female is a more mottled beige-yellow color. Lesser Goldfinches feed on various plant seeds, dandelion, thistle and other wild plant seeds and raise their young on soft unripe seeds. They adjust the time and place of their breeding to the presence of this staple food. This was taken in the José Celestino Mutis Botanical Garden, Bogotá, Colombia
