American goldfinch on a weathervane. I have a HUGE flock of these lovely little migratory birds residing with me for the winter.

I think the photo and the lyrics from a song by Michael Joncas say it all. . . This is dedicated to everyone who is experiencing disappointments and needs a little boost for sagging spirits.

I love it when birds fluff themselves up and look like little powder puffs! I seldom see the American goldfinches doing that so it was a treat to see this one ruffling its feathers on this sunny day in January that had a hint of spring in the air. Guess it was feeling fresh and frisky after the cold spell we just came out of. Here in Louisiana we enjoy the goldfinch’s presence only during the winter months. Its plumage is rather dull in comparison with its summer coat so when the bright yellow feathers start to appear, we know it’s time to say good-bye. They’ll be leaving us shortly thereafter.

The goldfinches are usually gone from southern Louisiana by this time, but for some reason I’m still seeing a few stragglers. This one is in the process of “changing clothes” from winter green to summer gold plumage. I usually don’t see the goldfinches after they’ve made this transition, but I’m happy that I can witness the fashion makeover this year.

This little goldfinch on a gray winter’s day reminded me of a ray of sunshine so I used the photo as the basis for a card to offer cheerfulness and to send sunny thoughts. I’d like to dedicate this image to my friend Chris who’s in need of some sunshine at this time in life.

When I saw this quotation on a church marquee, I thought immediately of this photo of a goldfinch on a Y-shaped branch and I realized the double meaning in the message. God is here when we wonder WHY and have no answers; God is here on those days that end in the letter Y—which is everyday. He’s here through our ordinary and extraordinary times, through our pain and our pleasure, through good times and bad. He is not a fickle God but One who is longsuffering and never abandons the children he created and loves. Jesus is called “Emmanuel” which means God is with us (on all our WHY?/Y days).

I hope I’m not overloading the circuits with so many goldfinch photos, but I just couldn’t resist yet another. The sweet gaze from this pretty bird was just irresistible to me so here goes yet another photo of my winter feathered friends who will be leaving the South before too long.

This male goldfinch seems to be deep in reverie; I applied PS filters to increase the daydream quality of the image.

Songbirds that I have photographed in my yard are showcased in each of the twelve months of the year. Included are the painted bunting, Northern cardinal, American robin, Eastern bluebird, Carolina chickadee, ruby-throated hummingbird, goldfinch, common house finch, mockingbird, and the tufted titmouse.

Two couples nested and visited my feeder, all in my backyard. They’re beautiful, colorful, and fun to watch. / _ / FATHER FINCH / Little father; little man- / raise those babies while you can! / Nesting time is too soon gone- / With all your chicks out on their own. / —-—-- / I had to do a great deal of work on this photo because the light was coming the wrong way as taken. First and Second, done in Pic Pub 10, I cropped the bird to bring him into close-up view, and sized the work. I also used to “lighting studio” in the same program. It didn’t work the way I wanted it to, so I switched to Photoshop and did the lighting, plus added a mild black framing in Photoshop. This was a good photo to start out with, just too much shadow on the side facing the viewer. / Find the problem first, then fiddle around with as many ways to fix it as you can.

A goldfinch knee deep in seed is a good representation of bountiful New Year’s wishes.

This little goldfinch was “chillin” on this balmy day in January when the temperatures rose to near 70 degrees after days of cold rainy weather. It was nice to visit with my feathered friends once again after being cooped up inside and trying to keep warm. Seems like we just wanted to say to each other, “What’s up?” after our days of isolation.

When I saw this goldfinch in all its feathery finery, I thought of those Las Vegas showgirls with their feather fans. Certainly has a bit of showmanship as wee wonder sits there all ruffled up and sassy.

This goldfinch took a Saturday afternoon siesta while I snapped away at its little nodding head.
