The maneki neko is a popular Japanese sculpture that is believed to bring good luck to its owner. Often used in businesses – A raised left paw attracts customers while a raised right paw supposedly attracts money. Also know as the Money Cat it is a symbolic ornament that offers people hope that they will achieve wealth and success. We all know that these ornamental pieces don’t directly produce what they promise. What they do offer is a symbol that you can look at when your feeling beaten. Having one in a highly visible place can give you a constant beacon of light that makes you persevere on something that may at times feel too hard. This is a friend who bought this t-shirt from here (Redbubble) and added her own artistic vision (with help of an experienced ‘Slasher’). Photo taken at the 2008, Rainbow Serpent Festival. I have also used a variety of found objects, including lace and ribbons…and an especially beautiful gold paint for the wings which were underpainted first to created texture. On of my favourite paintings, my heart and soul went into this piece…two sweet little girls in darling dresses hanging out in the garden together….what could be nicer.

Moscow 1980 was famous for the boycott by major medal hopeful nations such as the USA, but the Great Britain team won a total of five Gold medals. Allan Wells beat Sylvio Leonard (Cuba) to become the first Briton since 1924 to win the Olympic 100 metres in what was the closest 100m race at the Olympics in 28 years. A photo finish with 10.25 seconds for each runner. Wells also claimed a silver medal in the 200 metres. The middle distance races were a battle between Sebastian Coe and Steve Ovett, with Ovett winning the 800 metres Olympic gold, beating the then world record holder Coe, who claimed silver. Coe then turned the tables on his rival to win the 1500 metre gold leaving Ovett to collect only the bronze. Daley Thompson scored 8495 points in the Decathlon to win gold, leaving the USSR challengers Yuriy Kutsenko and Sergey Zhelanov to collect silver and bronze. In the pool the famous bald head of Duncan Goodhew won the 100 metres breaststroke gold.

This is for the Weekend Provocateur T-shirt Challenge ~ this weekends theme is to step out of our comfort zone and try something different… You can read all about it right here / But more than that, this was inspired by a direct request from Natalie Tyler and you can see what I am talking about here. So I stepped out of my comfort zone again to create this comfortable chair, by drawing it entirely by hand… I then scanned it into Photoshop, cleaned it up, boosted the contrast and then opened it up in Illustrator… From there is the tedious work of tracing and fixing and polishing…. but I am happy with the final result and hell I would love to be sitting in this chair right now!
