Throughout China, signs are used to inform, guide and regulate. As an English speaker, some of these tickled my sense of humour, however I could never rise to the challenge of writing signs in Chinese. I wanted to share some of these with you. / I photographed signs in Xian, Fengdu, Nanjing, Huan Shan, Nanjing, Chengdu and Shanghai, and have placed them in context with scenes from the same areas. / Public signs help us understand the writers and what they seek to achieve. In this way we can gain further empathy with the Chinese people.
