This child watched through a broken window as we worked inside. It’s times like this when the natural, uncontrived symbolism of circumstance just presents itself to you and all you have to do is click. There was not pretence, no staging, no crap. Just reality. It still engages me now. Look at his eyes. What is he thinking? He’s aching. He is full on aching. Right now the woodland and prairie is a tangle of vines, leaves, and brambles. There’s a profusion of berry, blossom, pods and leaves. Insects are busy everywhere; butterflies, beetles, grasshoppers, bees and flies all so plentiful that they could be jewels spangling the queen anne’s lace and ragweed. Birds are flocking and gathering in the smaller trees, all excitement and a – twitter about the journey south. The Canadian geese are honking and grazing in flockas so large they should be termed ‘herds.’ The hawks are moulting, and I’ve found two prime wing feathers for my collection, nicley barred and with plumes at the base of the shaft. On these walks I cant help but feel the soul of the land pulsing and shimmering. Fruits hang heavy on the vines, the air is dense with chamomile, wild mint, sweetgrass. This is the time of ripening and fullfillment ,and I’m right there in the middle of it. My favorite manifestation of the feminine face of divinity is the Celtic earth mother, and favorite male aspect, the Stag King. I paint them often and have even imagined a romance for them as the spirits of this divine couple pass through the various seasons of the year, leaving one painting and entering another in order to be together once again. They are the soul of the land personified, and when I walk in the lonely places, where birdsong and wind have replaced traffic and human voices, their presence is everywhere. This drawing is intended to be a painting, but has some tricky areas. Like the perspective of tilted head and caressing lips, or the goddess’s hand with its finger bones sending out roots and tendrils into the shoulder of the stag king, so I was working out these details on a sketch prior to painting. I was pulled into it and instead, drew them image on good paper and continued. In a day or so Ill add my notes, which need editing. Meanwhile, in this image you see the lord and lady in their prime, mature and wise. The passion of youth has ripened and improved with the passing season. On the 12th day of May 2008 I witnessed (along with thousands of others) a perfect circle in the form of a rainbow around the sun at about noon-time at a beautiful place in the Philippines. Completely perplexed, stunned and amazed at this extraordinary and divine sight, I HAD to create this artwork. Im not sure where you were or what you were doing at this same moment of time but I guess this is all we have. Small pigments of time all squeezed together. And if we’re blessed enough, we get moments like these and realise even for a second the gravity of God’s love. I only taste what I feel is Eternity and Peace. / And then, / He puts it back tenderly and instantly, / He is gone. / I am left with a thought that I repeat and use as my / Mantra, / My beacon back to Hope and Life. ‘With Love, I forgive’.

Pencil and dry brush watercolor on Bristol board. / The original story is barely more than a mention in another, more important tale. All we know its that the affair was brief and couple soon parted. So it is with deities and fairie folk every where, or there’d be no stories about their adventures and entanglements. The few lines caught my attention because of the properties each deity personifies. Druantia, the Fir Tree goddess and mother of the Ogham, is independent, strong willed, free spirited, nurturing and passionate. Aengus Og shares these characteristics, and is a reputed King of Fairie (as well as deity) – but also a gentle and considerate lover. On the simplest level this is a nice little story for a painting. On the second level it demonstrates masculine and feminine energies personified and united in harmony. On the third level its about Soul reuniting with the Beloved, the Source. Their mythic roles, at the end of this paragraph, will illustrate why and how. The following verse describes their first meeting, in Druantia’s words. “Deep within my forest I see him, standing beneath the tall silent firs, and I sing out! Hearing my voice, Aengus Og, maker of sweet music, protector of lovers, is curious, and drawing near, replies by plucking an irresistible invitation upon his golden harp. Thus we strangers approach one another, weaving a spell both wild and sweet; the perfect binding of wisdom and beauty, form and substance. Overcoming strangeness we become familiar, knowing one another amidst slippery, cool needles and wild herbs. We each savor the other’s fragrance, mingled with that of spicy pine, damp earth, and a myriad of plants and blossoms. We whisper, I in the green, rustling tongue of trees, Aengus with tender messages delivered by tiny magical birds, formed by his sweet kisses and warm, moist breath. The perfect union; the guardian and healer of souls and the mistress of transmigrating souls, those spirits spiraling downward from human body into plant, animal, and stone form. DRUANTIA (Celtic, British) Queen of the Druids, mother of the tree calendar, fir tree goddess. Fertility, passion sexual activities, trees, protection, knowledge, creativity. Also she’s the goddess responsible for the transmigration of souls through lower animal forms, plants and inanimate objects. She is also connected with the oak (research Irish, Scotch, Welsh, Breton, Gaulish root words for Druantia and druid) ANGHUS OG (Celtic, British… several versions of this name) God of youth, physical perfection, beauty, creativity, protector of lovers, god of fatal love, guardian and healer of souls, associated with musicians and songbirds. An accomplished musician, he owns a beautiful golden harp upon which he plays irresistibly sweet music, his kisses turn into birds carrying messages. The soul has a journey that might also be called a quest. Each of us has one and no two are alike. We are unique beings created to last forever. This work represents The Spirit, The Living Soul.
