What drew me to this shot (apart from the stunning beauty of the jaguar) was that here she was, trying to hide behind trees and leaves, yet she was literally just glowing in the sunlight… As if she couldn’t hide her beauty and strength no matter how hard she tried… I’m sure you know people in your life like this, or maybe even you yourself are like this… They hide behind screen names or job roles or maybe just shyness, but their personality, their inner glow, isn’t able to be hidden and just shines on… The jaguar is classified as a near-threatened species, which means that they could be threatened with extinction in the near future. Their main threats are deforestation, poaching, and conflicts with ranchers who kill them. However, things have gotten a little better for the jaguar; during the 1960s, their numbers saw serious declines due to the pelt trade, with around 15,000 jaguar skins being shipped out of South America each year. But the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species in 1973 decreased that number sharply, which just goes to show that positive legislation and treaties really can make a difference in helping species survive. 100% of the profits from the sale of this image will be donated to Wildlife Warriors Worldwide.

This is a gorgeous white and critically endangered bengal tiger. I love the softness of her expression, and the gentleness in her eyes. It’s so sad that we let such magnificent creatures come so close to extinction… What a loss it would be for this planet. All species of tiger are on the critically endangered list… Please support tiger conservation efforts, or we may lose these beautiful creatures. / . / Click to see all of my tiger photos. / . 100% of the profits from the sale of this image will be donated to Big Cat Rescue.

A beautiful flamingo showing off his (unnatural-looking!) flexible neck. This was shot at an exposure of -2 against a shadowed background, which made the background appear black. This shot was taken in Homosassa Springs State Park, Florida. 100% of the profits from the sale of this print will be donated to the American Bird Conservancy.

This beautiful creature is the critically endangered amur leopard (the same species as in Hope?). They are currently the rarest cat on Earth, with about forty left in the wild. Of these forty, there were only seven females; however, hunters shot and murdered one of the remaining females in April of this year, so now there are only six. This particular amur leopard is a female, and she is a rare gem indeed. / . / 100% of the profits from the sales of this print will be donated to Steve Irwin’s Wildlife Warriors Worldwide.

Some days isn’t it just the nicest thing to take a snooze in the sun? This gorgeous jaguar certainly seems to be enjoying herself. 100% of the profits from the sale of this print will be donated to Steve Irwin’s Wildlife Warriors Worldwide.

As humans, especially in the western world, we tend to spend lifetimes in pursuit of the “finer things,” like sports cars and nice watches and designer clothes… Many of us despair at not being able to afford such luxuries, and so we work hard and spend hours every day to make money to purchase them… I understand this, as I like nice things like laptops and camera lenses, too, and so I work and save money just like everyone else… But then there are days that I go outside and spend time with nature and I just have to marvel at it. Whether it’s the amazing beauty of a flower, the gorgeous eyes and colors of a tiger, the cuteness in the face of a wallaby, the jeweled wings of a butterfly, the amazing scenery of our natural landscapes, the fantastic beauty of the sky, or the elegance and grace of a snake... I see all of these and I realize that these are really the finer things, and they are everywhere, a gift from Mother Nature, free for all to enjoy and cherish. How can a laptop or sports car possibly compare to the spectacular form, color, scent, texture, and so on of these gifts of the natural world? (Those all link to great works by other artists that you should all check out, by the way.) For anyone who is interested, this was taken outdoors in natural lighting, and the effects were all created in-camera and not in Photoshop. The background was shaded and I used a -2 exposure to make it black, and I set the white balance to “cloudy” to bring out the lily’s warm glow. :) 100% of the profits from the sale of this image will be donated to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Meet Hercules… Hercules is an endangered snow leopard who was part of the American Zoological Association’s Species Survival Plan, a breeding program for endangered species aimed at helping ensure their survival. Such programs are a good thing, right? Well, yes… and no. Yes, breeding programs are necessary, and yes, we need to increase the numbers of these endangered species. But, these programs come with a price to the animals involved like Hercules… they lose their freedom and have to live their entire lives staring at the walls of a cage. Certainly it is for the good of the species, but how good is it for the individual animals? Hercules is no longer in the program, as he is what’s known as a “surplus” animal, meaning that there were too many in the program with his bloodline, so he had to be removed until the other bloodlines “caught up.” He now lives at Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Florida. So what to do about this? Some species have such ridiculously low numbers that the only way to ensure that we don’t lose them forever is these breeding programs. But there are other things that can be done, too, and they don’t involve breeding animals kept in cages for their whole lives. Case in point is an organization called the Snow Leopard Trust. The Snow Leopard Trust realized that the numbers of snow leopards have declined because humans are killing them for various reasons, mostly for purposes of poaching for their pelt and for their spare body parts which are used in traditional Chinese “medicine.” Now before you go and say, “What bastards! How dare they?” think about this for a minute… We are talking about people in impoverished countries where the average income is something like $1 per day. Be honest - would you be concerned about the snow leopards if you had no running water or electricity and couldn’t even feed your family? And if killing a snow leopard meant enough money to feed your family for months, wouldn’t you at least consider it? It is very easy to judge from the comfort of our air conditioned living rooms and our laptops, but imagine if you weren’t so fortunate… The Snow Leopard Trust has developed programs designed to improve the quality of life for these people so that they don’t have to kill the animals in order to survive. In the end, everyone wins - the people are better off as their quality of life improves and the snow leopards aren’t driven to extinction. Please read about these programs here and do what you can to help, either via donation, purchase of their products, or just by spreading the word. You can also help through the purchase of this image, as I will donate all proceeds from its sale to benefit the Snow Leopard Trust. Thank you for reading.
