  • Fancy from afar (the looking glass)
    by Symmetry44

They embraced every word / Reinforcing a need to be wanted / Feeling themselves feeling each other / Conjuring emotion from hidden desire—

And so as the miles between love and love’s desire deny us our greater yearnings, so too the need to fulfill them all the more. / In that I have loved from afar, so too have I in ardor’s light, been denied the sanctity of said love by the cessation of one of God’s truest and most beautiful creations. / This was written in hopes of bridging what seemed like an eternal gap between myself and the woman I was born to love. / If for all that love requires we should fade amid life’s mysterious yet salient flame there can be but a meager semblance of sentiment’s requisite then indeed we have lived to the degree of our desire to die for that which we were born. And in having lived as much I uphold that I love you Paula Anna Challinor and I always will my love… I bid you sweet adieu angel eyes..good bye for now my love….see you soon….

In today’s world there are estimated 5,000 nuclear warheads in the United States arsenal alone

In today’s world there are estimated 5,000 nuclear warheads in the United States arsenal alone. One out of three warheads is past their “expected” life expectancy and as time goes on pose extreme environmental issues as to where to put them as they are rotated out of the arsenal. Not to mention that the delivery systems may be brittle due to rusted decay, corrosion, and other maladies of age.

  • Origins of the glass elevator
    by Leoni Venter

“So what goes up and down?” Willy asked rhetorically. “Airplanes… helicopters… yo-yo’s… escalators… elevators…”

This is part 4 of a never-completed bunch of anecdotes from the history of the Chocolate Factory. You know the one… Standard disclaimer: This is a work of fan-fiction. “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Charlie and the great glass elevator” were written by Roald Dahl and I’m not claiming to have invented the elevator, Oompa-Loompas or Willy Wonka. I just went to visit the factory for a while…

  • Mr. Percussion Man
    by Leoni Venter

...Or would you steal a rhythm / From the ancient spirit of the air / And play it on the bongos / The steel drums / Or the lively tambourine?...

I wrote this poem for an amazing musician called Alasdair Malloy. I tried very hard to be the one to create a website for him, once upon a time. At least my nagging gave his management the idea to start a website for him, and you can find it here: http://www.alasdairmalloy.com/ Anyway, I have not seen Alasdair perform live, I only saw him on two of Mike Oldfield’s “Tubular Bells” concert dvds. And his obvious joy in performing was what inspired me to write this poem. The ‘glasses’ mentioned in the last verse refer to the fact that Alasdair is one of the few people in the world who can play a “glass harmonica” – a series of wine goblets filled with water to various levels and then each stroked into singing a certain note. It is quite astounding!
