True Story: Once a very famous glass blower (who before glass techniques are as they are today rather so out of this universe!) held a big class. He was very famous and his style was unsurpassed back then. His class consisted of about 100 people, his students for the weekend came from all over the world, all eager to learn something. After two intense days of showing them all the details of his work he held a goodbye seminar going over his teachings and told the class if they ever had any questions as to what they learned here he would accept their calls and he would help them with what ever it was they did not remember. One student raised their hand to ask a question.., rather embarrassed but determined to ask. / “Excuse me, sir, I have a question…” / “Please” he said, “Well you have had us for 2 days now… showing us all your original ideas to your work…. aren’t you afraid that we will steal your ideas and copy what you do?” He smiled and said,,,,, Well I would, if I thought what I shared with you was the last idea I would ever have” ..............!! ......And so it goes, if we trust the ‘infinite nature’ of our being we can allow everyone in. We never have to worry who has the limelight or no… Our turn is always here, first in our hearts and minds about our work… / I am learning this here at RB with all of you. Sometimes I can feel other feelings besides ‘It’s all good in the hood’ as my neck of the woods might put it. But I am learning to trust everyday the power of co-creation. It is necessary for me like going to a yoga class. I love the energy… sometimes others can do more than I can, but…As my brother Paul who is a great yoga teacher says to me… / Just take your shoes off and look around with love and stick to your mat. Stay with ‘your’ expansion and all else will follow. So I am sometimes having this experience here that feeds me… yesterday was one of the first times I felt a group expanding force, everyone was doing their own thing and yet when someone posted it was as if we all did it together… / I am in complete appreciation of you all. / Linaji

You can make this an etched glass effect, or, by inverting the filter, make it appear as though the shape/type/whatever is moulded in the glass. Because my glass is light, I will be using a black filled shape. If your bottle or glass is dark, the type/shape/whatever, would need to be white. So lets get straight on with it. You can click through on my glass image below to get the larger start image, or you can use one of your own. Just remember that any settings I use are relevant to this file 720 X 1000 @72dpi. Your first step will be to create a new layer above the b/ground layer and then fill it with white … turn off the visibility of the layer by clicking on the little eyeball icon next to the layer. I’ve chosen the ‘Flower Oranment 2’ which is a Photoshop default shape, and I’ve drawn it on the glass …. see image below. Make sure that you are working on the Shape Layer (or type – making sure the spelling is correct) and go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur, a small dialogue box will appear asking you to rasterize the shape or type, click OK to make that happen and then choose a small amount of blur. I have used 2 pixels on this particular image … which might be a tad too much …. we’ll see. Next you are going to create a flattened copy of the image and save it to your desktop…or somewhere that you will remember, because we are going to be using it shortly. Go to Save As and when the dialogue box appears, make sure that your uncheck ‘layers’ and check ‘copy’ See image below. Now, duplicate the original b/ground layer and turn off the visibility of the shape layer and the layer you filled with white. Working on the duplicate b/ground layer go to Filter>Distort>Glass and the Filter Gallery dialogue box will appear. Look at the right hand side of this box and notice where it says Texture, click on the small arrow and a small box will appear that says load texture, click on this and load the file that you previously saved. As you can see, I called mine Flowerdistort. You can fiddle with the Distortion and Smoothing, but you will have to leave the Scaling as is. You can also check and uncheck the Invert box to see which variation you prefer. Once you have the settings as you like click OK to make it happen. And here is the image with Inverted checked. And that’s it. Fiddle around with the settings a bit till you get what you want, and remember that if the bottle, glass etc., is dark you will need to reverse the colours i.e. the layer will be filled with black and the shape or type would be white.

I’ve just dranken a large glass of tea. Yes, dranken Yes, large .. yes glass. I used to drink large glasses of tea, “all the time”, and once they were drunk, they were dranken. This is because I also used to utilize the English language, oh so very often, and with great aplomb. Sadly, those days have fallen by the wayside; but, no more! I shall drink my large glasses of tea, and believe now that they are of great and healthful benefit to me. In prior years, I was told that this is simply not so, that once should cut down for this reason and that. Well, in prior years, before I did cut down and started drinking more water instead, I was a much healthier person. I used to walk everywhere and drink large glasses of tea. Something which is, again, fashionable. Well, maybe not the large glases; no, myriad small cups of tea should be made, in endless repetition, and sipped in a genteel manner. However, I shall make very large glasses of tea, only a few times a day, and suck them down in a very gentile, let’s use it all up now and quickly, manner. And, then, perhaps, I shall walk.

Over the weekend I have done the glass blowing course I had mentioned. The weekend was completely captivating. Our hands were literally held by another’s as we manipulated molten glass and transformed it into glorious (at least in my eyes) objects. The glass was entrancing as it moved from running to sticky to solid in a matter of just a few seconds. It could be both generously transformed and unforgiving. In the process of this you enter a moment when you are focused completely on the object. But it is a focus which has to take in two or three other people because you are always working with others. They are keeping you from being burned. Are helping, holding and guiding. I don’t think I have done anything else that is quite as completely captivating while thoroughly sharing. I look forward to my next time out (and will post pictures of my work when it has cooled). Me Under Tuition / A Classmate in the Zone / Before the Fire /

I know talk about money is really crass (hey we’re all in this for the art alone afterall hehe) but I thought you might find the following amusing and/or of some interest. First the good news – I’ve just realised that over the last 10 months I’ve made my first (he says optimistically) thousand dollars from photography – yay!! Now the bad news – I figure I’ve outlayed in excess of $20K on photography equipment and related expenses in the last 2 years – booo! So that means I’ve made back 5% of what I’ve outlayed – so glass 5% full! And if I can just STOP buying stuff then, at this rate I figure I’ll break even by about 2028 – yeehah! Unfortunately I don’t seem to be able to stop buying stuff – I got so excited about making my first grand that I’ve gone gear shopping again – sigh – $850 down the tube. So I guess that actually means the glass is really 0.75% full and that I’ll break even in 2158. Ah well if you can’t pass on debt to your kids what’s the point in having them I say! Anyway – what I thought you might be interested in is the breakdown of sources of income – it really surprised me: 1. Sales and commissions arising from hanging pictures in my office at work – $610 / 2. Sales from local gallery/giftshop – $240 / 3. Sales and licencing from RedBubble – $218 / 4. Sales from 4 group art gallery exhibitions – $132 In short – exhibiting at work accounted for about 60% of the income and in my local area (where most of my shots are taken) another 25%. In other words if people have some sort of connection to you or the place you take pictures of, plus they can physically see your work, you are more likely to sell it. The exception to the latter for me seemed to be Gallery exhibitions where, in each case, not only my pictures failed to sell but almost every other photographer also failed to sell. Given the cost of gallery exhibiting I’ve come to the conclusion it’s a dead loss for landscape photography. / I also have to say although sales from RB have been a relatively small proportion of tthe total – most of the total sales I got involved me showing my RB site to prospective purchasers and I’d have to say that not only being able to show my photos but also the range of formats people can get them in, actually helped secure most of the sales of the framed prints I sold. One more thing – most of the sales I’ve made have been of prints that I printed and framed myself. I’ve not found it to be more cost-effective to do it myself (the cost of DiY printing and framing and getting framed prints from RB is very similar, in fact really quite a lot cheaper from RB when you consider the labour – DiY framing is an absolute bugger I find). But what I’ve found is people really prefer a titled and signed print in the frame by the photographer over one that isn’t from RB. Maybe RB could create a new category of individually signed and titled mattes for prints at a higher price than unsigned to cover the cost of sending mattes to photographers for signing and then having them sent back – pretty cumbersome though. Love to hear about other people’s experiences if you would care to share. Cheers Geoff

First of all, I want to thank the moderators of “The Woman Photographer” for featuring my image “The Red Pitcher”. I appreciate the feature so much. Also, thank you for voting for my image “The Beach at Cape Coral”. It came in as #5 in a recent competition with the group “Florida the Sunshine State”. Just wanted to let everyone know that we have launched a new group! I had the idea for it a while ago, but wanted to see how hosting the Eastern England group went first. It’s so much fun that we’ve gone ahead with this group too. It’s called Art of Glass and I believe the title is fairly self-explanatory :P I’ve seen some wonderful artistic photography of glass objects amongst your work, so I’m hoping you’ll check out the new group and think about joining :) We’re all for featuring work, and can already think of some challenge ideas. Without a photo to show you, I’ll endevour to put the piece into a journalistic picture for you. I am an ex-stained glass artist (my new home is missing the proper ventilation) . So you might well imagine my fingers covered in bandages midway through this project. I had a client who wanted a stained glass art piece but was looking for “something different”. He was a single man, newly divorced and newly nestled into his new house and wanted it fresh and different for his new lady friends. He was also very short on budget, having been slapped with an alimony and child support order. / I built the man a tree. I salvaged a new sapling from a construction zone and completely “wired” each and every branch, reinforcing them as I went along. I then took all of the green glass from my garbage bin and lovingly created each individual leaf using the copper foil method (approx 800 of em!) and attached each and every leaf to the tree. The result was a “living” piece of stained glass art which sat at his front window and scattered little green refractions of light throughout the room and the walls. And he never had to water it!

Some of you may have come across this journal announcing a challenge in which we present the process behind our work. So I decided to present the process of how I did Born From the Cell. / / / / The Secret is… / / / / / / / I cast myself a really big hand then place a piece of origami on it! / / / / I’m kidding :P / / / Here are the instructions for the typical paper crane: / / / / To do a small one I first need to cut a perfect tiny square. There may be occasions that the paper will not have a straght edge, so I apply a bit of math and creativity to get the right angles, proportion and size. Here I define the edges of the square through a series of folds. / / / I first create a straight edge by a single fold. / / / To get the perpendicular corner of a perfect square I make another fold by overlapping one side of the first fold with the other and making sure they line up. / / / / / / / Along one edge, I mark with a needle how far in parrallel with the other edge I want my next fold to be (in this case 3mm), and fold along the edge again. / / / / / / Now I want to make sure those parrallel edges will also be 3mm like the first. I can use a ruler, but suppose none is available, and the first edge was done without measuring, here is a way to be precise: / / / / I make a perfectly diagonal fold by overlapping folded edges on both sides. One end of the folded diagonal will go through the intersection of a pair of perpendicular folds while the other bisects the other fold to define the third corner of the square. / / / / The diagonal fold is not only a measuring device, but a head start with the crane folding prior to cutting the paper. So essentially I’ve already done step one in the instructions above. / / There are severals way I can proceed from here. I choose to make another diagonal going the other way by overlapping the folds; this time I have a third guide from the previously folded diagonal. / / / / / / Using the two parralles lines bisected by the diagonal ones, I can fold the last edge / / / / The parrellel lines should be perfectly overlapping themselves. Meanwhile the last fold should go through the intersection of the diagonal lines with the parrallel lines. This means everything was done precisely. / / / / From here I can cut the square, but there is still more I can do to make the folding process easier. / / / / I divide by 3×3mm square into four, which is easier to do now then when the paper is small. Now I cut the square / / / / / / It is now time to proceed with folded the crane (following the instructions above): Step one, fold in half into a triagle / / / / Step two, fold that triangle in half. This is more easily accomplished thanks to the second folded diagonal line prior to cutting. / / / / Step three and four, open the triangle and press flat, and repeat on the other side. This is where the folds for creating the divided squares come in handy. / / / / From here on things are trickier so I have to create a special set-up. Here a magnifying glass holds down a piece of tape from which I will proceed with the rest of the folding while looking through the glass. If the tape is too sticky that can ruin the paper, so earlier on I stuck it to my pants a few times to collect some lint and not be as adhesive. / / / / Now I’m taking pictures through the magnifying glass… / / / / Step five and six, fold edges to the centre and unfold. / / / / / / / / / / These folds just act as a guide for the next step. I omitted folding the top corner; it doesn’t do much here. / / Step 7, open an press flat. / / / / / / Repeat on the other side. / / / / Finally I fold the head and the tail. / / / / / / After I finish folding the crane, I position it on my hand and shoot it through a magnifying glass. Since this is so close that my hand will take up the background, it didn’t matter to me how messy my workspace is :P / / / /
