  • Franz Josef Glacer in New Zealand, September 2007. I loved the way the light caught this thin piece of ice and brought out the blue. We got really lucky with the sunshine. © Stacey Hatton: Please do not use this image in any way without prior permission

  • And then the arrival on the Jungfraujoch, in the heart of a glorious glacier world on the very roof of Europe! Superb views extend as far as the summits of the Vosges Mountains in France and the Black Forest in Germany. The Great Aletsch Glacier, at 22 km the longest ice-stream in the Alps, begins on the Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe.

Background Information: / Moraine Lake is a glacially fed lake in Banff National Park, 14 kilometres outside the Village of Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada. It is situated in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, at an elevation of approximately 6183 feet (1884 m). The lake has a surface area of 0.5 km². The lake, being glacially fed, does not reach its crest until mid to late June. However, when it is full, it is a beautiful shade of blue. The lake gets its color from the refraction of light off the rock flour deposited in the lake on a continual basis. • / I just got back from spending the last 3 days on Mt. Rainier and had to process one image before I go to bed. Every visitor to the park has an image of Mt. Rainier from this view point at Reflection Lake but not too many are willing to be on the mountain before sunrise to catch the first rays of the sun. This is my verson of everyone’s photograph of Mount Rainier at Reflection Lake. This image was processed as a HDR image.

  • Athabascar Glacier, Icefields National Park, Alberta, Canada. / March 2008 Taken on our road trip through the Rocky Mountains in March this year, we were already falling behind on this day, losing time after so many great stops and photo opportunities along the way through the Icefields National Park onto our next destination of Pocahontas, just outside of Japser. We had agreed that we would have to limit our stops to reach our destination before sunset, but when we turned a corner and saw this, we couldn’t resist! A foolish decision to save time, we decided not to go through the usual process of jumping out of the car and putting on our many layers of warm clothes, hats and gloves… this would just be a quick stop. Big mistake! This place was cold… this place was very cold… this place was fer-fer-fer-freezing! Not only that, but the best shooting point was actually a short run down the road… it would have been a walk had it not been so cold! Destination reached, we set about shooting, fingers shaking, body temperatures dropping… it wasn’t long before we couldn’t stand any more and headed back to the car… ran back to the car! Claire even getting hysterical with laughter during the process – as they say, we could but only laugh! Anyway, lesson learned! We had been so careful before and always been appropriately dressed… this wouldn’t happen again! Glad to have got at least one shot from the experience!

  • Taken near the Mendenhall Glacier, 13 miles from Juneau, Alaska. The glacier empties into Mendenhall Lake. Nikon D200, VR Nikkor 80-400mm lens at 400mm, 1/500 s at f/5.6. Post work was limited to contrast control, and color corrections using adjustment layers and masks.          (Shown with walnut frame and off white matte)

  • The highest peak in the alps around Val Gardena, Italy (also known as Groedn, Austria. It’s a World War I thing. Language-wise, the area is if anything more German/Austrian). The view from the Marmolada was pretty staggering, the altitude was high, the ski back to the chairlift long, and (after I mistakenly skied past the chairlift) the challenge of getting back to the hotel before the whole region shut down was intense. And although I failed to make it back all the way and had to settle on a taxi, the photo was arguably worth it. It also achieves a rare (though dubious) personal photographic honor. For the last three ski trips, my favourite mountain photo has been my computer’s desktop theme for more or less a full year until the next ski trip. And this is the one for 2009. Below : the one for 2008: / Below : the one for 2007: / (interestingly, the ones for 2007 and 2008 were both taken on cheap Nikon point-and-shoot digital cameras. 2009 was taken on a Pentax DSLR. Which proves that even cheap point-and-shoots are no slouches in the right conditions)

  • A fabulous and HOT! day at Mt. Rainier National Park today, August 19, 2009, showed the exposed rock and receding glaciers. At over 14,400 ft. high, snowfall could begin soon for the winter. A climber who had just hiked down from the summit said the remaining snow was only six to eight inches deep, other than on the glaciers themselves. We normally only see this mountain as a majestic white giant gracing the Puget Sound horizon, so it’s a surprise to see so much of the black rock showing out from under its remaining snow cover. The forests along the way are incredible, worth seeing just for themselves. Below are the paintings and photos on my new 2010 Redbubble Calendar: /

  • A visit to Moraine Lake, Banff National Park, Canada in early June afforded me a chance to capture this 2 image composite. Just a couple weeks prior, the lake was still frozen solid.
