Franz Josef Glacier, New Zealand While climbing the glacier I had to lay on my belly on the ice while my friend held the back of my jacket cause I kept sliding down – would’ve been a long bumpy ride to the bottom.

This berg was as big as a house! We were bobbing around in a little lifeboat so we could be close to these and get some photos. Our main ship, the Skorpios III, although happy to plough through ice flows would not venture closer than 1 kilometre to the glacier face. The glacier in the background is the Pope Pio XI, the largest glacier (I think) in South America. Southern Patagonia, Chile.

Background Information: / Moraine Lake is a glacially fed lake in Banff National Park, 14 kilometres outside the Village of Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada. It is situated in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, at an elevation of approximately 6183 feet (1884 m). The lake has a surface area of 0.5 km². The lake, being glacially fed, does not reach its crest until mid to late June. However, when it is full, it is a beautiful shade of blue. The lake gets its color from the refraction of light off the rock flour deposited in the lake on a continual basis. Background Information: / Peyto Lake is a glacier-fed lake located in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. The lake itself is easily accessed from the Icefields Parkway. It was named for Ebenezer William Peyto, an early trail guide and trapper in the Banff area. The lake is formed in a valley of the Waputik Range, between Caldron Peak, Peyto Peak and Mount Jimmy Simpson, at an elevation of 1,860 m (6,100 ft). During the summer, significant amounts of glacial rock flour flow into the lake, and these suspended rock particles give the lake a bright, turquoise color. Because of its bright color, photos of the lake often appear in illustrated books, and area around the lake is a popular sightseeing spot for tourists in the park. The lake is best seen from Bow Summit, the highest point on the Icefield Parkway. The lake is fed by the Peyto Creek, which drains water from the Caldron Lake and Peyto Glacier (part of the Wapta Icefield), and flows into the Mistaya River. I never did get around to posting all my autumn shots….so here’s another one…there’s a huge group of photogs all massed across the other side, trying to jostle for position on shifting reed beds and yuckky mud, and further across there’s a couple more. I gave up waiting over that side, and moved to the western edge to see what I could see…..now you can see what I could see :) This was processed in NZ with photomatix, back when I was probably a little overwhelmed by the colour….I might reprocess it and see if I like it better with my newer techniques New Zealand / Seascapes / Frogs / Lensbaby / Infrared / Industrial / Spam / Panorama / Landscapes / Real Estate Series / People

It is not how it looked in the viewfinder but it is how I wanted it to look in the end. The process of creating photographs is one with endless possibilities between the accurate recordings and significant transformations through camera settings and post processing steps. There is no "right" way to do all this and all options are available – at least for the open minded. So we choose the shutter speed, set the aperture, widen the angle or zoom in, highlight some elements, darken others, sharpen somethings, blur others, saturate and de-saturate, blend and hide,... all which change and transform the raw photo into something interesting for the eye – at times even visual art. Here I tried to create a piece of work that resembled the reality but also transcended into new visual dimensions which could not be seen by the human eye on location – merely in my mind. The long exposure and various post processing steps made this possible. The raw material was captured on Havskåren, a tiny island in the Oslofjord by the Nøtterøy archipelago. I posted this because I liked how the composition turned out. I also love the colors – muted yet warm and inviting. Earth colors. I hope you enjoy this work as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Glacier National Park, USA. It was one of those mornings when you could have heard a pin drop the air was so still. I heard a slight splash, and next thing a Beaver swam across the Lake right in front of me ! Absolutely the icing on the cake for me, though I know plenty who view the critter as a real nuisance ! Since I had the wide lens on the camera , I didn’t get a shot of it, but, what the heck , the light was playing my game on this day ! We also spotted a Black bear on the slopes of the mountain across the lake to my right. A day to cherish. Shot on a CANON EOS 40D, with polarising filter attached, and mounted on a tripod,. f22, 1/6sec, underexposed by one stop, iso 100, RAW file, then processed in Adobe Camera RAW, further adjustments in PS CS3, Levels, Curves, and finished with LAB colour. Surely one of the most treasured spots to sit and watch as a new day breaks. Lake Louise, Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada / July, 2009 Lake Louise, set in the Banff National Park in Canada is perhaps known as the Diamond of the Rockies for no other reason than its sheer beauty alone. Having arrived in Canada on the previous afternoon after a long trans-Atlantic flight, the idea to beat the effects of jet lag were adopted with a 3am alarm call and the chance to shoot Lake Louise in all its splendour at dawn. Following a 45 mins drive from Banff accompanied along the way with storms over the mountains lighting the otherwise black night sky, we arrived at Lake Louise in good time for sunrise. Some may know the lake as a bustling tourist spot with coaches coming and going throughout the day. Dropping off their cargo at the water’s edge to take in the majesty of Louise before whisking them off to a further destination all to the sound of clicking shutters and the gentle whir of digital handy-cams. For Claire and I the experience was to sit alone in silence; the only guests at Natures matinee performance… The dedication to early starts could not be better rewarded.
