I realized only through discussion with Rosa the relevance of this 60’s song, which might have had some effect on my thinking in early adolescence and perhaps on the way I’ve led my life, up to now…. “Little boxes on the hillside, / Little boxes made of ticky-tacky, / Little boxes, little boxes, / Little boxes, all the same. / There’s a green one and a pink one / And a blue one and a yellow one / And they’re all made out of ticky-tacky / And they all look just the same. And the people in the houses / All went to the university, / Where they were put in boxes / And they came out all the same, / And there’s doctors and lawyers, / And business executives, / And they’re all made out of ticky tacky / And they all look just the same. And they all play on the golf course / And drink their martinis dry, / And they all have pretty children / And the children go to school, / And the children go to summer camp / And then to the university, / Where they are put in boxes / And they come out all the same. And the boys go into business / And marry and raise a family / In boxes made of ticky tacky / And they all look just the same. / There’s a green one and a pink one / And a blue one and a yellow one, / And they’re all made out of ticky tacky / And they all look just the same.” (song by Malvina Reynolds, 1962) / / Well, it sounded horrific to me, that this is LIFE. I wanted something else, no ratrace, no boxes, no known way uphill and no American Dream, living like the Johnsons, or just competing to be a bit better, while worrying what all the neighbors think of me. / I have lived my life with this in mind… / ...then at the age of 50 I all of a sudden (mid-life crisis;-) felt worthless because others (i.e., friends from primary and highschool) got this “American Dream”, had lots of nice achievements to show for all their years of effort, had nice houses and saving accounts etc…. I, on the other hand, had nothing but my experiences, my thoughts, my understandings, lots of studies, some minor exhibitions to tell about and some drawings I felt good about… But wasn’t this all I wanted from life? Learning experiences, some inner growth, being creative in anything I did, as much as was possible… I never set out to rank high in society (what’s the point?) and never was interested in material achievements to begin with, so what’s the problem? I guess the problem is reaching mid-life and summing up your life according to the standard way of thinking… lol. “Make up your world” was featured in the group ImageWriting

This tee, depicting homelessness in London, was designed for the This is London Calling challenge. If you like it, please go vote for it ;-) “Hee-hee London – tee 2” was featured in the groups Unconventional Artistry and Made In Digital. London is the capital city of England and the UK. With a population of over 7 million, London is Europe’s largest and most densely populated city with 4,679 people per square km (Office of National Statistics 2002). The London region is made up of 32 London Boroughs and the Corporation of London. 17% of the UK’s unemployed people live in London. The rate of homelessness in London is twice as high as the rest of England with over 50,000 homeless households. According to the Communities and Local Government estimates in June 2003 about half of the people sleeping rough in England were in London. The main reasons for the high levels of homelessness in London are growth of the housing market and ongoing population increase in the capital. Although wages are generally higher in the capital, they are unable to keep up with rising house prices. The demand for housing is increasing and the supply of affordable housing is decreasing. The Mayor of London has introduced a London Plan which calls for half of new homes in London to be affordable, to help reduce the levels of homelessness in the capital. Source: Homeless London
