I’d say it’s on again, but I think this is the first! So… It’s on! / October 19-21. / And photographers are needed. It’s an opportunity to see some great bands, meet and network with other photographers and possibly even sell images to artists, local businesses and members of the public, so business cards are also a must! Images must be supplied to the Caloundra City Council for use in advertising, with you retaining full copyright and use of your images. / Application forms and details are found here and if you have any questions you can email me steve@templarinternational.com or Andrew andrew@templarinternational.com

oh mi god! wow last night was awesome. my ear drums are ringing. I’ve stayed up late to rock out and I think, even after a shower, I still smell like a rock n roll girl! because / porcelain are and were always awesome there is no way to know what you missed, but you can hear it still here I decided not to bring my camera as I used to photograph them all the time-sometimes you need to enjoy from the other side (which is what my cuz said she enjoyed, as she used to be in the band-just to enjoy and not be ‘on’) but there were so many hello moments-the lead singer Lauryn / ‘Axel’ Roberts has changed since that photo-grown her hair long, it’s LA blonde, and when she does the head bangin’ thing, it looks awesome. Her voice is still rough and powerful and sweet. The guys are a tight, electric, loud, radio ready musicians and the electric violin is still a feature, with their new violinist lookin divine while revealing there is definitely a place for violin in rock n roll. the sonar bar is only two weeks old-but I bet being right under the harbour bridge will attract loads of artists. hopefully we’ll see porcelain again in australia-but it may be at the horden or somewhere big or just on massive billboards and delta goodrem level of airplay-get ready of porcelain overload soon!

What started out with piss poor planning… ended up a fun night Originally intending to catch a bit of experimental electronic folk, I turned up to the Art House with my friend Seana, to a large number of tattooed types in black tshirts…. METAL NIGHT! My gig guide reading skills need serious improvement So, not being a massive metal head, I haven’t been to a show like that for years. Regardless, I had a blast, the bands were great, the crowd were hot and were having a great time. Here is some shots of local lads House vs Hurricane. They liked what I’ve done, and schedule allowing, I should be catching them again in a few weeks to get some more shots of them in action Here is what I got from the night…. House vs Hurricane ...and, for the record, I’m blaming metal mayhem for chipping the lens on my glasses, not the amount of beer that I consumed on the night blah :)

Monday was Jam night at my friend Tony’s jazz club the Paris Cat in Melbourne. Here are some of my shots of the incredible musicians at work Paris Cat Jam Night It was definately the hardest show I’ve had to shoot so far. It was much, much darker than I have shot before, as well as fighting over saturation from red lights… my new greatest enemy. I think the shots turned out well, and I’ll get some more practice there – I can see myself becoming a regular there on Monday nights… free entry, and 2 hours of incredible music – can’t go wrong

  • My first ever Redbubble check BOUNCED!!!!......sort of

I got my first RB check in the mail today. Haven’t seen one of those (checks) since a German impresario and TV star named Carlo Von Tiedeman tried to stiff me and our band back in 1985 ( band’s name was “Wir sint’s” it means “It’s us”). / My pal Michael Knube (slightly naive….even though at the ripe age of 34 ) went to pick up our loot after playing the “Hafen geburtstag St. Pauli” for 7 full days 8 times a day 45 minutes each time. / We had a PA, system to pay for and 12 piece harmony singing band (we’d been the main attraction 3 of the days, TV and all). He came back smiling from ear to fucking stupid ear, and told us that Mr Von god damned Tiedeman was so satisfied with us that he had given us a raise and doubled the money we should have according to contract. / I thought..NO WAY!! / And he had a check to prove it….. / A FUCKING CHECK!!! / (rule no1 in music business: NEVER ACCEPT A CHECK, IT WILL BOUNCE, BECAUSE NO ONE CARE ABOUT THE FUCKING PIANO PLAYER, THERE ARE ACTUALLY PLACES THEY SHOOT AT THE FUCKING PIANO PLAYER…HENCE THE SIGN DON’T SHOOT and so on…..... He said eeeeh is that so? / In business terms, I was the only experienced one among us ( they were all top notch musically, but children business wise and hardly ever played a gig before in their life ) / THAT IS SO MICHAEL!!!! I said, grabbed the paper slip and went to find the shitbag’s office. It’s a long and sad story, two super big bouncers tossed me out on my ratata after I (not knowing this guy’s celebrity status, which was BIG!) had threatened him, insulted him, thrown two snicker bars at him….and a beer bottle I brought for good measure. / As time passed, we met in court 4 times. We never got a penny (the assholes always get away), and had to spend heaps on lawyers…even bigger assholes… he he So understand me being a little skeptical as I walked in to my local bank this morning to have my RB check, earned through hard work (ok not that hard work), put in to my account, and got:....WE CAN NOT DO THAT MR. SLEEN!! I said WHAAAAAT!!! It turned out since they were just this tiny filial they didn’t handle cash (I knew that) and foreign curency (didn’t know that), so I had to go to the other town on our devils island which is 10k down the road…... / I thought ….NO WAY! I called my back door man and asked him his stand on American Dollar, and he said cool curacy I’ll take it. / So the money I made on RB never made it to my bank account, but there will be no shortage of stuffing for my old hubbli bubbli this easter…. / Nothing so bad it aint good for anything….... so they say…. / who says so?.... / they….... / Oh…. POS

As you may have noticed from my morning spamming, I caught Wilco from the front row last night, and ended up with hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of shots. I’ve managed to pick my favorite 50 odd, in two batches Wilco 1 Wilco 2 I posted the photos for Wilco fans on a messageboard, and I’ve got people emailing me from everywhere to confgratulate me or buy prints of the shots. A bit crazy, and not something I’m used to… but it’s a really great confidence boost. I was worried that taking pub shots of bands would mean I could go to a big venue and still get the same sort of feel for the moments and magic that happens on stage. Huge sigh of relief now that it is all done, I’ve got to get to downloading the show. For anyone that was there, I was the one complaining that I had requested Kamera online and it wasn’t on the setlist. Jeff did yell out in front of the whole crowd for me to get my money back… but I didn’t see one cent of that! :P

Thanks everyone for the huge wave of comments and favortings, it’s been a real lift. I grabbed my new camera this week, and got out and about to take photos of it. I’ve got a huge few weeks coming up, so I’m cramming in as much camera time as I can to prepare. Tomorrow, I’m off to the Cherry Rock festival in Melbourne, as a photographer for www.fasterlouder.com.au… it’s my first press pass type gig, so it’s nerve racking. The fact that it’s been moved from a laneway festival, into a series of shows at the Palace due to last minute mayhem makes it more challenging. I was on “band & social” shots, but that is goig to be tough as heck in there. We’ll see how she goes. Next week is my first planned photoshoot, that might be used for a magazine cover… more on that later though, I’m to scared to think about that at the moment Back to the D300… here is some of my favorite shots so far Chord – f1.8 1/500 ISO3200 Unimaginable ISO from my D80, I knew it was going to be better…. but that image has processing no noise reduction at all City Lights – f1.8 1/50 ISO3200 This came from fooling around in burst mode. The photo was taken outside the now infamous Spleen Bar at around 2am. I was annoying Seana by holding down the shutter release, and reeling off 6 frames per second… incredibly, 10-15 excellent photos came out of it, more due to her natural grace than my skill City Lights 2 – f1.8 1/160 ISO3200 (seeing a trend here?) This is my favorite, simply due to how impossible this photo would have been for me previously. Without a flash, and only a street light to work with, the D300 made this look like I knew what I was doing. Hopefully Seana reads this, so she finds out that this was the first jump she did…. the next 4 I made her repeat was more to amuse myself than to get another shot – the candid impromptu ones always look better ;) Focused – f1.8 1/30 ISO1600 Not the most action packed or energetic shot of the night, but one that I love. I’ve always had to dull the colours with high ISO shots from the D80. This came out clean and warm, without any of the colour bleeding I’m used to seeing A bigger collection of some of th band shots taken from the night are here So Cherry Rock tomorrow, which will be an awesome opportunity to catch some seriously rocking bands and fans in action. Prepare for another wave of ISO3200 photos then… for anyone 50/50 on upgrading to a D300 from a D40/D70/D80/D200… you have to do it.. now. Hopefully I’ll come to grips with it a bit more in the coming weeks, and really start to show what it can do

I have a photoshoot with a pregnant mother on Thursday this week! I’m so excited for this one! I havent gotten to do one myself yet for a belly bump but I have so many ideas! I just borrowed wooden blocks with letters on them to spell out baby, boy, girl, or the baby’s name (I dont know that info yet) and I have pink and blue tulle to maybe tie a bow around her belly. She also is going ot have her daughter home too (who is like 3, I think) and I’m going ot take a few of her leaning against her mom’s tummy and her hand on her belly and such. I’m so excited for this! I also got approached by a lady in our church today who asked about prices for a family photo shoot. She agreed with my pricing and said she was going to find out when her husbands next weekend off of work is and call me back. She also wants me to take portraits of her two kids. So theres some more moula!!! That one I’m more interested in the money than I am in the art! Haha! I need to make some money too! I’m looking at buying another lens, I want to be able to zoom! That would make kids’ shoots so much easier because then they wouldnt know I’m taking their pictures and I dont have to be in their faces while they play and be theirselves. Anywho, jsut wanted to give a heads up on that. Wish me lots of luck!!!

The next 2 or 3 weeks might be a bit crazy as it will be school holidays again. This weekend i have a couple of gigs on as well as a Tulip festival to go to. During next week i have to think up ways to keep my 4 and 5 year old children happy. Then i have more gigs the next weekend, then i am taking the kids away for most of the following week. / When we get home from that little trip away i have more gigs to go to and it’s time to make sure all the school stuff is ready for term 4 of school… This year has flown by so fast- can you believe there are less than 100 days until christmas!? So if i am not around much, do not fret, as i will be back soon enough to continue viewing all your magnificent works!

I have six of their albums and the gig was after work hours. So, yeah…when Charlize Theron again proved noncommital on the whole romantic dinner thing, I decided to head on down to Regent Street, eventually settling on a position at least 50 metres away, K10D and 90mm f2.8 in tow (not ideal shooting conditions, but then again last time I tried to photograph U2 it was using a 3megapixel point-and-shoot from the halfway line of Stadium Australia). And since it was a free concert, so I was hardly going to say no! / It was a ‘surprise gig’ but the evidence was out there for anyone walking past BBC House that day that somethat was going to happen (and it wasn’t a Miley Cyrus concert….). / Adam Clayton and The Edge exit BBC Radio 2 less than an hour before their ‘surprise’ ‘mystery’ gig. / Three-quarters of a Bono leaves BBC Radio2. Thanks, dude with purple clipboard! / By way of background, U2 basically took over the BBC today – from interviews and a morning concert in front of 400 lucksters, to a TV show and more interviews during a drivetime broadcast. So when they started wiring the outside of BBC House with cables that stretched to the roof, only a couple of people were massively disappointed Coldplay weren’t doing a performance / “Why yes, we DO have a new album out”. (Though I’m not yet fully warmed to ‘Boots’, I think both ‘Breathe’ and ‘Magnificent’ are good tracks.) / No, BONO! Get away from The Edge!! (wait, that could be misconstrued…) / “You know the words, so everybody sing along!! Oh, come on… this album has been pirated and available on bittorrent for weeks, as if you haven’t illegally downloaded it already!“ / ‘Wait, what? The Ting-Tings and Taylor Swift also have new albums out? Damn… we may have timed this release badly..” / The crowd was approximately 5,000 people, and the BBC live coverage (which I enjoyed the next day) was excellent too. Best concert I’ve been to, based on the artist and the entry fee. / Bono noted the irony of somebody like him who is afraid of heights writing a song called ‘Vertigo’ and performing it on a building roof. Oh, great…what next… the band really weren’t lost when they wrote “Where the Streets have no Name”?? / The Edge also needs to get away from… the edge. / The band played three songs (‘Boots’ and ‘Magnificent’ from the new album, and ‘Vertigo’ from the prior one) then hurried back for a quick addional performance of ‘Beautiful Day’ before the crowd were asked to disperse. Or, I guess preferably, go camp outside the closest HMV til Monday when the album is released. / “Yeah, so… if you guys could all clear the road now, we can move our Bentleys before they get wheel-clamped…” Ah, London. It has its moments. And this was several. Oh,and a couple of hours before that I snapped Mr T leaving BBC Radio1. Somtimes you get your cake, and you get to eat it, and then Charlize Theron calls. Today, I scored 2 out of 3 and I’m not complaining! / Until nex time!

Dan ain’t dead… just hustlin’! Heey all on RB! I’ve missed talking with all of you, but what can I say? Life has been so crazy lately that it’s been hard to find the time to blog again! I guess the main reason why life has been hectic is because of the economic crisis. I didn’t really think it’d affect me, but after losing my job in January (and still having about 50 payments left on my car), I’ve been relying on unemployment insurance, my mother’s generosity, Craigslist, and God’s grace to see to it that the monthly damage to my finances has been minimal. Not that I’m struggling, mind you… it’s just that, well, no matter how much money you think you’ve got, it always looks like a lot less when you’re on the crappier side of the employment fence. That said, nearly every day I’m scouring online job postings and classifeds, looking for anyone in the LA/ OC/ IE area of Southern California who needs a photographer. The general rule with Craiglist is that you can send out 100 emails/resumes in a day, and be lucky if even one person responds, but still, can’t leave any stones unturned, can I? Thankfully, there have been other avenues – word of mouth and Model Mayhem have done a much better job at getting me freelance gigs. I guess I’ve taken a short break from fine art photography and dedicated myself a little bit more to the kind of photography that helps pay the bills – that is to say, fashion/modeling and wedding photography! Because after all, there’s always an aspiring model who wants some great headshots (an art which I am slowly but surely mastering), and there’s always couples who are getting married! Speaking of weddings, I just shot my very first REAL one last week! Mind you, I’ve done a few weddings before, but in those cases I wasn’t the main shooter. This time, I was more or less the one running the ship on my own, so the pressure was much greater. You can see the results of it here It actually went a lot easier than I expected, but shooting in that darn church was a hassle. It was bad enough that I couldn’t use flash AT ALL during the ceremony, but the fact that the church was so poorly lit to begin with made everything so much worse! That said, I had my I.S on during the whole time in that church, shutter speed around 1/20s, was shooting as wide open as my telephoto would allow (f/4-5.6), with my ISO bumped all the way up to 800. CAMERA NERD ALERT Now don’t get me wrong, I love my Oly E-520 and all the wonderfully sharp Zuiko glass that goes with it… but Olympus also has a reputation for having noisier images than most of their competition when you go to ISO 800 and beyond. Noise isn’t a deal breaker for me when it comes to cameras, but it still is an issue I’d rather not have to deal with – especially as a photographer who prefers available/ ambient light over studio work. My idea of a perfect camera would probably be the new Olympus E-620, but with a few minor adjustments – it’d hold the same kind of batteries as the E-520, have the E-3’s weatherproofing,/ SWD focus motor, be free of all those BS Art Filters which damage its reputation as a semi-pro camera (although I’d keep the Pop Art/ Grainy Film/ Soft Focus filters), and it’d also have a sensor that could keep images as noise free as Canon’s cameras. I don’t go gaga over Canon, but I was still impressed at how little noise there is in their photos, even when bumped up to ISO 1200/1600. That said, as tempting as it is to splurge on an E-620, I think I’ll wait for Olympus to create a similar camera in which its Achilles’ heel (noise) is less of an issue. In terms of the wedding I just did, shooting the whole church ceremony at ISO 800 was such that you could see the noise even when it was magnified at only 25% on my computer. The great thing, however, is that you can always convert the images to B/W and boost the contrast to give it a really cool, old school film kind of feel. It’s just my hope that that kind of look is one that the newlyweds can appreciate. Even if they’re iffy about that, the fact still remains that I got some great shots everywhere else that day! Taking some advanced photography classes in wedding photography and available light has really helped – it’s been getting easier to spot random locations that happen to have good light and milk it for all it’s worth! CAMERA NERD ALERT END And having knocked out that particular wedding, I’ve got a few new potential clients on my list now as a result! One of the bridesmaids will be getting married in July, and she wants me do photograph it. The emcee at the wedding needs some headshots, so I gave him my business card. And the wedding coordinator loved me too, so hopefully she’ll be contacting me soon as well. Weddings aside, I’m slowly building up a reputation as a fashion/ portraiture photographer as well! I’ve always had tons of fun photographing my friends and making them look like models (keep in mind that nearly ALL the people you see in my RB images are friends of mine, NOT professionals), but it’s also great to work with aspiring models who, for the most part, are a lot more passionate about being captured on camera. I’ll say it again, setting up a Model Mayhem account as helped tremendously in this sense, and as I’ve built up my portfolio, more and more people have started contacting me, requesting shoots. Nearly all of them just want to do TFP shoots, but even in spite of the fact that I earn no money off these shoots, I still learn a little more as a photographer with each one I do. Plus, the only thing I give the models in return are low-res files of my best shots for online promotion only and three prints, so it’s not like they benefit a whole lot more than I do from our shoot together. If they want extra prints, or a CD, that’s when I start charging them. I’m also trying to keep a healthy balance between shooting male and female models. Normally, whenever there’s a photo shoot to be had, it’s always the ladies who step up first. Not that I don’t appreciate that, but shooting male models was something I had less experience with, and in some ways is more of a challenge for me. When you photograph a woman, there’s a wide variety of poses/ looks that she can get away with and still look drop-dead sexy. Guys are more confined to looking tough/ macho, and it’s difficult to push those boundaries without making them uncomfortable… so working within those “barriers” ultimately forces you to think harder about how to get a great shot. So far, I think I’ve done a good job making both genders look beautiful, and I’ve still got a lot of growing left to do. Weddings/ Fashion aside, the daily hustle for me mainly consists of smaller things here and there. Currently I’m working as a retoucher for another wedding photographer. She takes a while to get in touch with me when I do projects for her, and none of her phone numbers work when I want to contact her by phone, but otherwise she’s a wonderful photographer, and a very kind/ down to earth person, which is probably the most important part. Even if you greatly admire someone’s work, something tells me you’d admire it a lot less if they took you under their wing just so they could be a complete jerk to you. There’s also a small photography company that I found on Craigslist who calls me every so often to be their assistant. I got my first taste of what being a “commercial family” photographer was like, thanks to them, since they mainly photograph little league portraits/ first Communions/ etc etc. The gigs are good for a quick 60-90$ in your pocket, but I can’t say it’s something I see myself doing more often in the future. It’s probably the lack of creativity that goes with that kind of photography – you set up the background, you shoot your models one by one (all of whom are wearing more or less the same thing), they need to pose the exact same way, the lighting is always the same… yeah, not my cup of tea. I felt less like a photographer and more like some mindless machine, cranking out photos on a conveyor belt. For those of you who’ve read the Willy Wonka novels, do you remember what Charlie Bucket’s father did for a living? He worked at a factory, screwing caps onto toothpaste bottles. THAT’s what it felt like for me, doing that kind of photography. I know times are tough, but in the end I’m hoping God will open up better opportunities for me. You can call it stuck-up and narcissistic, but at the end of the day, I’m not a photographer – I’m an artist whose medium just happens to be photography. It’d hurt if my potential clients/ employers looked at the work on my Bubblesite and were unable to tell the difference. After living my whole life as an artist, and slowly mastering the specific art of photography with the help of people on RedBubble and elsewhere, I have no intention of being remembered merely as someone who just knew how to use a camera. So screw you, crappy economy! You’re NOT gonna downgrade me into becoming some second class “photographer” with no artistic spirit! Whew… anyhow, that’s enough for now… I’ve still gotta speak on where I’ve been from a spiritual standpoint (that’s a journey that’s been a bit more interesting, lemme tell ya). I can only hope that, in spite of the whole micro-blogging craze, people will still be able to hang on to a story that’s longer than 100-200 words (CURSE YOU, TWITTER!)

A couple of months ago I picked up a Nikon / Nikkor AF-S DX 35mm f1.8G and it has hardly left the camera since. The shine hasn’t warn off this new toy just yet! This week end I took the D300 and 35 1.8 to a local gig I’m more than happy with the results, so I thought I’d post a few here. Most of the shots were shot at ISO 3200, f2.5 – 2.8, 1/100 s. I also used a feature I never really thought I’d use on my camera … live view! It’s very handy when shooting over your head, even if it is much slower than the normal auto focus.
