As it says. They played a blinder despite the audience being thin on the ground. Mallorcans are not the biggest ticket buyers in the world, in fact there is so much on for free that they feel they need not bother. Pity it was a great Gig and after 44 years or thereabouts together colloborations with everybody and anybody including Van Morrison and the Stones the Chieftains are still putting their enthusiasm into every gig. 007 in a series “The Chieftains” all marked up at 25% except this stage shot which is 50%

This is the town where I was supposed to play this last weekend. Unfortunately, it got too late and the weather wasn’t looking all the early either so we bailed. There were still so many acts on stage that we were hardly missed. All around this street there was snow on the ground, some places a foot deep and I was warned to walk very carefully or I’m find myself on my butt wondering what happened. Thank goodness it started to rain when I was leaving and that prevented it from snowing and took out the black ice I was most afraid of. The Nikon D80 did this with the 18-55 lens, a tripod, and a LOT of guesswork. LOL!

I got an email from my guide suggesting I get my rear out and catch the perigee moon tonight. Some of the details from the article are copied below. So I looked up what time the moon was planning to peek over the horizon here on the west coast of America, grabbed by Nikon, tripod, and coat for a 20 minute drive out of the light pollution of Sacramento. My usual spot was semi-taken by a fresh fruit vendor but he wasn’t gonna stay there after dark and I wasn’t buying any fruit in the light. All perfect. The thing was that it’s still the same moon we’ve all been seeing for centuries – well, the old ones of us have, anyway. It has he same light spots and dark spots and massive impact zones it has sported for Earth forever; the “dark side” doesn’t have Luke Skywalker on it but it may as well since we can’t see it for any geographic variety anyway. Over 430 shots later, I’d had fun playing with aperture priority and shutter priority settings, ISO verses both, making the camera delay to help avoid my shaking it when depressing the shutter release, and every other dark shooting setting I could think of. But the moon still looked like the moon. (sigh) Then a little surprise happened. I was just admiring how boring it was admiring something for the trillionth time when a big bird passed the moon. Damn, missed it! Well, that was a once-in-... Another one! Damn, missed it. Oh well, I’ll get one of those shots some…. Damn, another one and I missed it! By now something like a little light is going off in my head: just aim and shoot before you miss another one, you idiot! Oh. DUH. A camera that shoots 3 shots per second, a possible FLOCK of geese, and I’m thinking about the ones I missed and not the ones that might still be coming! DUH. I barely get my finger up before one passes and I just ignore it; it CAN’T be the last one, right? Shots start firing and I get one immediately but it looks like a slacker cuz it’s just floating along looking like a fat missile with a funny end up front. Then The Shot happens and I know it instantly. I pack up and drive my freezing hands home to see if it came out or not; I didn’t bring the laptop because I was just going to shoot everything and weed out the bummers. And here is The Shot: a big goose, wings open and being silhouetted by a perigee moon. I’d be lying if I said I finished editing the shot in less than 30 minutes; obviously, it wasn’t perfect because the camera’s focus was locked on the moon and couldn’t see the bird long enough to adjust. But that’s probably best since it may have looked crummy with a bird in sharp focus in front of a bright white unidentifiable moon. Just so you don’t think I’ve grown soft here, the shot DID present all the usual insanity that comes up when naming a photograph. And with a goose and a moon for principle words, the options are staggering: “Passing Goose Getting Mooned” – now smells like Parmesan” or “Moon Gets Goosed By Fly-by-Flock” There are so many crummy possibilities I’m leaving them ALL for you to become creative! / _____ / Camera/photographic details / Nikon D80 / Nikkor 70-300mm / f-stop:5.6 / ISO: 100 / exposure time: 1/250 / Exposure bias: -1 step / metering mode: spot / Shutter priority / Saturation: VIVID / Sharpness: hard / __________ / Actual totally really true details about this event (Wooooo!) / _ / a “perigee moon”, 14% wider and 30% brighter than ‘lesser moons’ The moon’s orbit around Earth is not a circle; it is an ellipse, with one side 50,000 km closer to Earth than the other. Astronomers call the point of closest approach “perigee,” and that is where the Moon will be this weekend. Perigee full Moons come along once or twice a year. 2008 ended with one and now 2009 is beginning with another.
