Japanese inspired paintings by Nicole Whitty Geisha paintings featured in Fleurieu Biennale 2008 Opening Nov 8, 1pm Gei Exhibition Nov 7 – Nov 30 Oliver’s Taranga Vineyard Cellar Door / McLaren Vale, South Australia Inspired by traditional Japanese art I decided to explore the elusive yet beautiful world of being a Geisha. / “Geisha” ( pronounced ‘Gay-sha’ ) means artist in Japanese. The ‘real’ Geisha was not a common prostitute, the first Geishas were men who entertained patrons through artistry. The Geisha evolved into being the role of a woman in Japan, holding the equivalent status to celebrities today for their time. / The different forms of art they performed were tea ceremonies, dancing, calligraphy, painting, music, not to mention they were and still are walking pieces of art.
