Japanese inspired paintings by Nicole Whitty Geisha paintings featured in Fleurieu Biennale 2008 Opening Nov 8, 1pm Gei Exhibition Nov 7 – Nov 30 Oliver’s Taranga Vineyard Cellar Door / McLaren Vale, South Australia Inspired by traditional Japanese art I decided to explore the elusive yet beautiful world of being a Geisha. / “Geisha” ( pronounced ‘Gay-sha’ ) means artist in Japanese. The ‘real’ Geisha was not a common prostitute, the first Geishas were men who entertained patrons through artistry. The Geisha evolved into being the role of a woman in Japan, holding the equivalent status to celebrities today for their time. / The different forms of art they performed were tea ceremonies, dancing, calligraphy, painting, music, not to mention they were and still are walking pieces of art. The Alhambra – Arabic: literally means “the red one”; the complete name is “Qal’at al-Hambra”, which means “The red fortress”) is a palace and fortress complex of the Moorish rulers of Granada in southern Spain occupying a hilly terrace on the southeastern border of the city of Granada. Once the residence of the Muslim rulers of Granada and their court, the Alhambra is now one of Spain’s major tourist attractions exhibiting the country’s most famous Islamic architecture, together with Christian 16th century and later interventions in buildings and gardens that marked its image as it can be seen today. Its most westerly feature is the alcazaba (citadel); a strongly fortified position. The rest of the plateau comprises a number of palaces, enclosed by a relatively weak fortified wall, with thirteen towers, some defensive and some providing vistas for the inhabitants.

now I must confess I’m not crazy about ironing but I am crazy about Antarctica… and sometimes maybe just a little crazy… so when I was lucky enough to go there a while back I managed to convince a whole bunch of people to pose for me for this silly calendar…. and as you can see the exciting and fabulous sport of extreme ironing knows no bounds… every gender and race and age and particular type of faith can and is able to embrace the concept of extreme ironing….. so go you good thing you get that ironing board out to a crazy place near you and give it a go…...:)
