Lianne / wrote an amazing poem about the desert Desert Wanderings Are the rare oases enough to / sustain the desert nomad? / And where is the desert boundary – / would the journeyman perceive / its end, or like me, see Canaan / and think it only temporary respite – / can he see beauty where I see none, / sculpture where I see sand – / has he more praise for palm trees / than I for all of Canaan’s promise? Deserts are but dry expanses of the mind / the hypochondria boredom breeds, / unirrigated months, parched and barren / where there is naught to slake one’s thirst / and coolness only stones beneath one’s tongue, / monotonous thoughtscapes, uninspired / wishing for rivers, never neared mirages / and longings so undefined / that even prayer is sterile. What happens to dreams that die? / Are they reborn in other minds / nourished in more fertile ground – / do the sands that cover them / windshift / reviving them again, or are they / preserved, like dried straw flowers, / still rich in color / but sapless, too fragile now to grow?

This picture of a lovely laughing child was taken some years ago now while I was driving out from Meekathara in the WA central desert on my way towards the Gun Barrel Highway. At a tiny camp called Wiluna I stopped to look for some art and come across this family sitting in their car in the shade. This child’s sweet face has stayed with me all this time but today, this momentus day, is the first time I’ve felt like I could display it. Little Debbie and her family are impoverished by anyones standard but they clearly have love and strong family bonds. This child represents what we that is we white Australians are saying sorry for. Sorry that we couldn’t see value in our fellow Australians. The first settlers here in this wide brown land. Sorry that we took little children away from their family and their country and people. Only a relatively short time ago this child and her mother would have fled at my approach fearing my whiteness and the dreadful things we whites perpetrated upon them in the name of the law. So from the bottom of my heart Debbie I would like to say Sorry. Sorry Sorry indeed I am very sorry. And I hope that now we can all go on together in peace and trust and mutal respect. For all the little Debbie’s white and black and brown and pink and yellow lets all step forward together hand in hand and welcome whatever it is that comes next…..... / . / this image was taken with an old Olympus SLR using Kodak Gold 400 asa film

My origami calendar I used tweezers to create the last few folds. The paper I folded with was about 15×15mm big. Basically I present the creator and the creation where the crane is framed by my fingers forming a circle. We can only understand size, fragility and significance when we compare two things. When we think, for example, how big the world is, we’re like tiny little specks of sand, or even atoms, to the eyes of a God holding the earth in his palm. / / For a better idea of scale: / / / I did not make this crane and take the picture with the description in my mind; but created it by instinct. It wasn’t easy drawing out my words initially. However many viewers have left very inspiring comments about my work, and for that I am grateful. My origami calendar / / Just one sheet makes a big difference; / One sheet that can make over 2000 cranes. / Each crane a step closer to a better world; / Each piece a step closer to peace. Each square in the grid paper is 5×5mm; and to be exact, there were 2028 full squares in the paper When I was in grade 5 our teacher read “Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes” to our class. Sadako Sasaki was infected with leukemia. She spent her days folding cranes and making wishes upon them; wishing for her health and for a more peaceful world (the quote above is my writing inspired by the story of the thousand paper cranes). This concept was originally created in 2008, and photographed without a tripod. But now I have a tripod and decided to re-shoot this again and re-uploaded it on September 6, 2009. I love rainy, overcast, windy days. Someone has to, I suppose. The pink/purple of the fireweed has yet to reach its full splendor. As Alaskan legend has it, when fireweed blooms all the way to the top of its spire – the six-week countdown to winter begins. Some of us can hardly wait. It felt great to get out in the elements!
