Completed 2004 age 18 I was inspired by the Japanese artist Hiroshi Senju, who tends to limit his colors in his paintings. Sometimes he paints an image where the background is the complimentary colors of the subject. His style is simple but at the same time intense, where the foreground stands out from the complimentary background. Medium: Watercolors This is a painting done in my sketchbook. The paper isn’t watercolor paper, but at least more durable than regular printing paper. The Sea Venture was one of the first ships to arrive in Bermuda. It was thrown accidentally off course by a hurricane and landed on the reefs intact. Its original course was with a fleet from England headed towards / Jamestown, Virginia to aid in the colonization. From being shipwrecked, the crew and passengers of the Sea Venture settled in Bermuda and benefitted from its tropical paradise and set up a small colony. This painting is a Mixed Media piece, combining original digital photography taken in Bermuda by SBC, painting, and drawing. It is intended to capture the natural and surreal beauty of Bermuda. It won an Honorable Mention Award in the Rowayton Art Show in 2006 and First Place in the Darien Art Show in 2007. Thank you for your interest, comments and purchases!

I was watching the movie “The Ultimate Gift” listening to the character played by James Garner talking to his grandson when he said… ‘Learning is a gift… even if pain is your teacher”. As soon as the words had finished coming out of his mouth I honestly said out loud – YES!! Immediately I was blown away by the quote and I wrote it down and thought about its meaning for weeks. I’ve never felt so affected by a sentence before. Upon reflecting this quote I found quite confronting to realise that I spent my twenties doing everything to avoid and “run away” from my emotional pain.. Now in my 30s I’ve realised that pain was essential for me to be a more caring, less-judgemental and forgiving person. Pain seems to show us the truth in others… the truth that all people, no matter what’s on the outside… have a heart capable of breaking on the inside. / / / original pencil drawing ...stayed up very late drawing “Nature’s Child”... you know when it’s time for a baby to be born, i think it’s very similar with art… the inspiration just comes when it’s ready…and sometimes that means drawing til 3am like i did with this one. ...the drawing took about 3 hours, and the digital colouring took about 5 hours today. ...inspired by some fantastic eyes i’ve seen lately, (drawn by people on RB) and the dear little willy wagtails…they are so cheeky…they aren’t authentic in colour here, because they are always black and white with little markings above the eye…but i have put their essence into the work hopefully. I think this is my favourite so far :) /

/ / “Beach Picnic” is a pencil drawing which I’ve coloured digitally, I hope you like this image with mother and daughter in similar sundresses. As a child we enjoyed beach picnics all the time, mum would make us special fried chicken (better than Kentucky Fried) and we would go out on the boat to a little island, where i would play with soldier crabs for hours on end, while dad fished and mum sunbaked… they were wonderful times. We also went on the annual Beach Picnic to Bonny Hills with the church and we were great friends with the priest back in those days who was a top water skier.. We would see so many things at Bonny Hills, sea snakes slithered past in the creek where we were swimming and there were amazing white clay deposits in the sand….hours of fun were had by all… not to mention we even had a little mass there… top fun :)

Summer Breeze a beautiful poem by the same title by a dear friend of mine Anne Van Alkemade / Inspired by the song Summer Breeze / by Seals and Croft Also inspired by myself and my experience of having bugs and insects come to try and take up residence in my ears… scrabbling around in there, getting all comfy…while I’m going crazy…click beetles, houseflies and spiders so far have all tried this… lol This is a girl who has an affinity with nature, and as the summer breezes begin to blow here in Australia…....the animals are drawn to live in her hair thinking that it must be branches of a tree… yes, my hair’s that dry… :) I thought it a fitting one for summer, hope you like her… Pencil drawing took me about 3 hours / Digital colouring – 10 hours / Total time 13 hours

/ / / Original pencil drawing “Topiary Teapot” About the Art / A pencil drawing coloured digitally, an elegant geisha enjoys the simple pleasure of her garden. The teapot topiary is also a fountain, you can see water pouring out of the spout and a sprinkler at the tippy top.. :) Inspiration / The inspiration came through my parents, who have a topiary teapot and a topiary sugar bowl in their own backyard, the also told me of an amazing topiary garden they visited in Tassie recently. / / Here is the “teapot topiary” in my parents’ backyard, they are sculpting teapots and sugar bowls….there are lots of fun things in my mum and dad’s garden !! Even the Cheshire Cat and Tinman have a spot in the sun there :)

There are all the colours of the rainbow in this piece, to remind us that there is always hope, no matter how hopeless it seems sometimes. The rainbow is a sign of hope. Children See/Children Do powerful message for grownups I hope that all the children who look at this painting will drift off into a faraway place in their imagination and feel wonderful for a while, especially if things are getting them down…and if life is wonderful, may this little picture add to the wonder and spark the imagination.
