  • This town died when the railway that / sustained its existence re-routed. / An eerie ghost town with faded shop fronts / and a host of photographic possibilities - / especially during a stormy sunset – / draping life over this faded facade and (almost) / lifeless town. / Terowie SA 2007 / Made famous as the town where Gen Douglas MacArthur gave his “I shall return” speech on March 20th 1942 at the railway siding – a rest stop on his way by train from Darwing to Adelaide. (Visit the plaque on the deserted platform) Taken on a three day trip from Barossa to Broken Hill to Mildura looking for typical australiana to grace the 2008 CoolDrive calendar. /

  • Weird as it was, it only rained at the Ghost Town and was Beautiful and sunny when we left. After shooting the Ghost town 2 days later I broke out with Poison Oak. and of course there was the voice of an elderly Man I heard in one of the worn down sheds (Nobody around for at least 30 Yards).

  • A nice old home in the Ghost Town of Bodie. The windows are not broken…

  • Bodie Ghost Town still has a few old cars lying around so I used this one’s windshield to frame a portion of the town.

  • Lots of textures in this porch. Used it to frame a bit of the town in the distance.

  • This is an interior of one of the homes in the ghost town of Bodie. They are protected and in this shot my camera with a very wide angle lens is poking through a wire mesh to see this view. At the time I did not notice the “ghosts” because this was one of the first times I had used the lens and was not looking for them. It is the time of year though for ghosts and such to make their presence known!

  • Clouds moving through the mountains south of Telluride, Colorado. View from the switchback to the ghost town of Alta Lakes.

  • Bodie Ghost Town in the Seirra Nevada Mountains in Eastern California. This 1800’s Gold town once had a thriving population of 10,000 people. It was a true wild western town with gun fights, saloons and a huge redlight district.

  • Featured in “The Wild West Show” – June 2009. Rhyolite, Nevada is a ghost town just outside the boundary of Death Valley National Park. It was a town built on gold and the hopes and dreams that the precious metal inspires. Founded in 1904 and abandoned only 15 years later in 1919, it was a very short-lived community. • A planned and never completed community in Salton City. They paved the roads and planted the trees and no one moved in…

  • Uznaya Glyboka Bay in Northern Kamchatka. A small town deserted in 1960 with the collapse of the herring fishery. There is no road access to this remote outpost. The only way here is by sea and it is several days from the nearest port. /

  • Location: Bodie Ghost Town / Highway 395 / California / Technique: HDR (High Dynamic Range) Historical “Bodie Ghost Town” is an old mining town off of highway 395. Till this day folks that visit Bodie have sworn sightings in this famous landmark. Murder was not uncommon during the gold rush days and rumor has it that ghosts still linger the dirt streets of Bodie. • The setting at Mescal resembles a late 1800’s town complete with a dusty main street lined with one and two-story buildings. Cattle are frequently the inhabitants, along with rolling tumbleweeds coming to a stop against a leaning hitching post. Wind flutters curtains through windows. And off in the distance, rolling hills lead to lofty mountain heights that play with the imagination… Located just 45 minutes from the parent home of Old Tucson Studios, the Mescal film set offers an old western town atmosphere atop a gentle hill surrounded by natural tall grasses and native cacti. This location has been featured in over 50 film, television and commercial productions including: Monte Walsh (1968 with Lee Marvin), Dirty Dingus Magee (1970 with Frank Sinatra), The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean (1972 with Paul Newman), Tombstone (1993 with Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer), The Quick and the Dead (1994 with Sharon Stone and Gene Hackman) and Buffalo Soldiers (1997 with Danny Glover). Unlike Old Tucson Studios, Mescal is a movie set. You won’t find fake gunfights or simulated hangings here, just a tour guide who will related the site’s history. It is in pretty bad shape so it’s unlikely that many more movies will be made there. It is located near Benson, Arizona. Photographed with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ 28. 300 views as of 12/2/09 / “Cochise Stronghold From A Distance” was featured in: / DILAPIDATED BUILDINGS/July, 2009 / THE WILD WEST SHOW/July, 2009 / OUT OF THE PAST/July, 2009 / GRUNGE PHOTOGRAPHY/December, 2009 THE MESCAL SERIES / “Cochise Stronghold From A Distance” / “What’s Upstairs?” / “Behind the Bar” /

  • Nevada City is an amazing place, but you have to be there early to get the place to yourself ! We got lucky, it was ‘off’ season and consequently very quiet , combined with a beautiful morning. / There were so many things to photograph, you could spend a whole lot of time there, but we were headed for Yellowstone, so time was limited sadly. Along with Bodie, California, this is a place I would happily return to time and time again …....... if only !! Shot on a Canon EOS 40D, polarising filter attached, and mounted on a tripod. Canon 18-55mm kit lens / f22, 1/10 sec, underexposed by half a stop, iso 100. Cloudy WB. / I processed a single RAW file in Photomatix, HDR. Then processed in Adobe Camera RAW, then Ortoned it in PS CS3, adjusting Curves/levels, selective colour, etc., plus a bit of dodging and burning. / FEATURED IN / http://www.redbubble.com/groups/your-magic-places / AND / http://www.redbubble.com/groups/dslr-users-only-3-a-day / AND / http://www.redbubble.com/groups/rebel-group / AND / http://www.redbubble.com/happy-haven / AND / http://www.redbubble.com/groups/unlimited-quality

  • I captured this around six years back, when we were doing a road trip of the South West. Jerome is a great place, full of character. We stumbled upon Joe’s place by accident – he calls it a ghost town, but it is rather more a collection of old automobiles and other machinery, a great place for a photographer – he has some rather quirky items dotted around the yard ! / Photographed in the heat of the afternoon sun, the light was not at its best for this subject, so I Ortoned and Textured it, to create a better feel. / You Tube do some great tutorials on Photoshop editing etc., including some on textures ! / VIEW LARGE for the details ! / I scanned a Fuji Velvia transparency with my Nikon Coolscan V ED, shipped it into Adobe PS CS3, where I cleaned the image up a bit with the spot removal tool. Then I played around with the Orton and textures until I was happy with the result. / It was shot on a Ricoh KR10 Super, mounted on a tripod, with polarising filter, f22. /

  • Taken in what is deemed as a real “Ghost Town” in Ballycroy, Ontario, Canada. Once a thriving, hard drinking milling town back in the late 1800’s. All that’s left is just a few scattered houses and foundations. / A very eerie place to visit.

  • This is a beautiful little community snuggled high up in the mountains near Maricopa, California. During a visit today I took this shot and then processed it in CS3 with textures, filters and effects. This is the little town where I found the man I used in the “Character Portrait” image uploaded earlier. In fact, my wife and I went there for a memorial service for my cousin and that entire community turned out. The gentleman in the character image was a friend of my cousins for many years, whom I had never met before. Wonderful people whom I thank for their hospitality.
